Doctor Who Season 14 Ranks Among Top 5 Shows on Disney+ Globally

While the fate of Doctor Who after the next season 15 is still uncertain, a recent statement from Disney Plus has sparked optimism among fans.

In a recent announcement, the streaming platform not only revealed the upcoming season’s debut on April 12th, but also hinted at the viewership numbers for the past episodes featuring Ncuti Gatwa.

The release reveals that Doctor Who “was a top 5 series on Disney+ globally every week it aired”.

Additionally, it mentions that the show is among the most-watched programs on BBC iPlayer and has been BBC’s top drama series for viewers under 35 years old this year.

As a die-hard Doctor Who fan, I’ve noticed an interesting change in the way we’re watching the 14th season. While overnight ratings might seem lower compared to past years, when you look at the consolidated figures, it paints a more optimistic picture. The BBC has stood behind the show, acknowledging its enduring allure among the younger generation and its thriving presence on BBC iPlayer.

Last year in June, showrunner Russell T Davies stated that while the show isn’t performing great in the ratings, it has been exceptionally successful among the younger viewers, which was our primary target.

During that particular season, the established sci-fi show switched its distribution method. Instead of airing on BBC One first, each episode became available on iPlayer at midnight and then later aired on television.

Besides advocating for the release model, Davies contends that it matches contemporary viewing trends. He referred to the midnight iPlayer broadcast as the “future of television,” enabling viewers to watch programs whenever they prefer.

For the forthcoming season, we’ll see a change as the fresh episodes are scheduled to air on iPlayer starting from 8 am.

The continuation of Doctor Who depends partly on its collaboration with Disney+, as this partnership ensures global broadcasting and financial support. Rumors about Disney potentially ending their participation have sparked doubts about the series’ lasting viability.

Although the decision about renewing the series is still pending, Davies has already started working on season 16. The verdict will be made following the airing of season 15.

In the 15th season of Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa will once again portray the Fifteenth Doctor. He’ll be accompanied by a new travel companion, Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu. Additionally, Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, will make a reappearance, continuing her journey as she reunites with her biological family.

Notable celebrities have been revealed for the guest appearances, with Alan Cumming portraying Mr Ring-a-Ding – a mischievous animated character causing trouble in a 1952-themed episode. Additionally, Christopher Chung and Rose Ayling-Ellis will also be making special appearances.
