In the final episode of the 15th series of “Doctor Who,” titled “The Reality War,” the Doctor is set to engage in a climactic confrontation with the Rani, Conrad, and the reappearing antagonist Omega, promising an exhilarating conclusion.

For the final episode, there are numerous plotlines to resolve, and although we anticipate addressing many of them, it’s possible that a few may remain unresolved, much like what has happened in previous seasons.

Is it possible that the characters will reappear in an upcoming season of the series, and if they do, when can we expect it? Alternatively, could this be the final chapter for the iconic sci-fi show, which has been intermittently airing for a staggering 62 years?

Read on for everything you need to know about a potential Doctor Who season 16.

Will there be a Doctor Who season 16?

For some time, fans of Doctor Who have been eagerly wondering if a new season is on the horizon.

This time, the nature of the questions is different due to the co-produced, financed, and distributed partnership between the BBC and Disney, which started from the 60th anniversary specials in 2023.

The fate of the show doesn’t just hinge on a decision by the BBC, as it has done before, but also on Disney’s decision now.

Russell T Davies announced in September 2024 that a decision about the show’s continuation would be made following the airing of Season 2. He also mentioned that this has been our anticipated course and the direction we’ve been moving towards all along.

Initially, it was hinted by Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Fifteenth Doctor, that a sixteenth season might be filmed this very year. However, recent indications suggest otherwise.

Actually, before the start of Season 15, Davies hinted at the possibility of a brief hiatus, attributing this to younger fans maturing and potentially returning to the series in a similar manner as he did.

He hasn’t stopped planning for upcoming seasons; in fact, he’s mentioned that his plans stretch up to season 18, or season 5, and he’s prepared to implement these ideas if given the opportunity to do so on-screen.

He expressed that at the moment, absolutely nothing is taking place regarding the show, but he can hardly wait to discover what will happen next. Furthermore, he expressed his hope that the series will return.

Ever since then, there has been chatter about the possibility of the show being cancelled, but according to an article from The Mirror, even if Disney decides to step back from the series, it might still be broadcasted on BBC without their involvement.

The report indicated that a pause might be imminent for the following two years, but an insider informed the media outlet that concerns about budgeting were exaggerated. It seems that most of the additional funding from Disney is allocated towards enhancing the image quality and special effects for Disney Plus – something that isn’t required for iPlayer.

According to the BBC’s statement, they haven’t yet decided about Season 3, as that choice will be made after Season 2 has been aired. Any other claims about Season 3 are merely guesswork or speculation.

Initially, our agreement with Disney Plus covered 26 episodes. However, there’s another spin-off series, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’, yet to be aired.

As a cinephile eagerly awaiting new releases, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming premiere of “The War Between the Land and the Sea”. This captivating spin-off is set to debut on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, as well as on Disney Plus for international audiences, later this year. It promises a compelling narrative that I can’t wait to dive into!

It appears that fans might need to be patient a bit more to learn if Doctor Who will come back for season 16 and in what format it may take.

When would a potential Doctor Who season 16 be released?

Given that there’s no official word yet on whether the show will continue or if the Disney deal will be renewed, it’s uncertain when a new season might air. Regardless, it seems we’ll have to endure a delay longer than what transpired between the last two seasons.

Absolutely, the void will be filled with a new series titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea”. However, since it’s unclear when new episodes of Doctor Who are being made, fans might need to wait until at least Christmas 2026, or perhaps as late as 2027, for fresh installments.

According to the report from The Mirror, it appears that a hiatus lasting until 2027 is probable, suggesting a return to less exciting times for Doctor Who enthusiasts, temporarily at least.

I’m crossing my fingers that if the series comes back in 2027, it will find its way back onto a consistent filming and airing timetable then.

We will keep this page updated as and when we get any further news.

Who would star in a potential Doctor Who season 16?

At this point, it remains uncertain which characters will return for upcoming episodes of Doctor Who. The resolution of The Reality War is still pending, leaving us in the dark about whether Belinda will continue as a companion or not, and whether Ncuti Gatwa will reprise his role as the Doctor.

There’s been a lot of talk recently implying that Gatwa might be leaving the show. Although the BBC has flatly denied rumors that he was fired from his role, they haven’t clarified if he’ll stay or go, or whether he could have decided to step down following two seasons as lead character.

If Gatwa stays with us for season 16, we might witness a variety of his fellow actors appearing as well, even in smaller, recurring roles. Possible candidates include Varada Sethu’s character Belinda, Millie Gibson’s Ruby, her relatives, and the UNIT team. Among them is Jemma Redgrave portraying Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

Additionally, there are several ongoing storylines that seem to be building towards some conclusion. For example, Jonathan Groff’s brief appearance as Rogue in Wish World suggests he might return in future episodes, while Carole Ann Ford’s cameo in The Interstellar Song Contest hints at a potential full-fledged comeback for her character Susan.

In Doctor Who’s sixteenth season, we might see some new stars gracing our screens, contingent upon the outcomes of The Reality War.
