In the thrilling finale of Season 2 titled “The Reality War,” Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor faced a perilous situation where he had to prevent the world from being destroyed by Conrad, the Ranis, and Desiderium, all while avoiding disappearing completely. The season culminated with the Doctor being reunited with Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) and confronting Omega, an ancient Time Lord. This encounter brought some significant disclosures about the Time Lords’ demise, the Rani’s survival, and even appearances by a few well-known characters. The climax took everyone by surprise with an unexpected regeneration.
In the climactic event known as “The Reality War,” which took place on May 24, 2025, the Doctor was engaged in a frantic attempt to return companion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) safely home. This date had proved elusive due to the Rani’s manipulation of reality and time, as she sought to reach Omega in the Underverse. The season finale concluded with Belinda leaving the TARDIS after the Doctor rescued their child from the Wish World, ensuring a life for her with Belinda. This marked the resolution of Belinda’s storyline, along with those of Ruby Sunday and the Fifteenth Doctor. The episode ended on a suspenseful note, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating what would happen next.
The Fates of the Unholy Trinity and Omega
The Rani’s Plan to Find Omega Backfired Horrifically
In the Season 2 finale of “Doctor Who,” Earth was controlled by the malevolent trio known as the Unholy Trinity: the Rani, who manifested in two forms, conspiracy theorist Conrad Clark, and the infant deity of wishes, Desiderium. Utilizing the Doctor’s Vindicator, the Ranis persuaded Conrad to create a new world according to his beliefs, distorting reality in the process. As people started questioning Conrad’s creation, it began to disintegrate, and the Doctor’s growing skepticism – the skepticism of a Time Lord – provided an opportunity for the Rani to shatter reality and access the Underverse, where they sought out the banished Omega.
In “The Reality War,” the Ranis managed to find Omega in the Underverse and liberated him from his confinement. However, as the Doctor informed the Ranis, the Underverse was a realm steeped in mythology. Here, Omega had been reimagined as a legend, becoming the Mad God. He manifested in the Rani’s Bone Palace in a grotesque new form, sporting colossal clawed hands and a cranium-like head. The Rani had envisioned using Omega’s body as a gene bank to create a fresh breed of Time Lords. However, Omega harbored different intentions, intending to consume Time Lords, starting with the Rani. In the most recent reincarnation, she met her end in the grips of the bestial Omega, who devoured her.
Following her successor’s tragic demise in a dual form, commonly known as Mrs. Flood, seized the other Rani’s time ring for a swift departure. This action leaves room for Mrs. Flood to resurface in future episodes of Doctor Who.
Alone against Omega, the Doctor activated the Vindicator against his ancient foe, channeling its accumulated power to force Omega back into the Underverse. Although Earth was spared from the grasp of the Time-devouring deity known as Omega, it’s essential to note that he remains alive in the Underverse and may potentially make a comeback in future seasons of Doctor Who.
In the meantime, while the Doctor dealt with the Ranis and Omega, Ruby encountered Conrad Clark. She acknowledged that Conrad had been benevolent, for he had attempted to provide a home and family for everyone, despite his questionable perspective on the world. Using the power of Desiderium, she wished for Conrad’s personal happiness, altering his life so that he was in a loving relationship and no longer a violent conspiracy theorist. It was the Doctor who transformed Desiderium into an ordinary human baby, stripping away the god’s ability to grant wishes. He was then left with Ruby, Carla, and Cherry Sunday, becoming her brother, Joseph.
Who is Poppy?
The Doctor’s Daughter was Created by Conrad’s Wish
Initially, Captain Poppy debuted on ‘Doctor Who’ in Season 2, Episode 5, titled “The Story and the Engine.” She had a mysterious guest role. Later, she reappeared in “Wish World” as the Doctor’s daughter alongside Belinda. Although their parentage wasn’t clarified in that episode, it ended with a cliffhanger suggesting Poppy was indeed the Doctor’s real child. In ‘The Reality War,’ the Doctor maintained that despite being born from Conrad’s wish and crafted from his and Belinda’s memories, Poppy was genuinely his daughter. Regardless of the need to terminate the wish, the Doctor took steps to safeguard Poppy.
The Doctor believed that the inability of Time Lords like him and the Rani to have children might be the reason for something called bi-generation, which is a sort of desperate survival instinct. To save Poppy, who was thought to be a Time Lord child despite it being supposedly impossible, he asked Susan Triad to create a Zero Room at UNIT Tower. This room exists outside our usual understanding of time and space.
In response to Ruby’s request, the Doctor embarked on a mission to rectify reality and restore Poppy, which he accomplished by channeling regeneration energy into the Time Vortex. This manipulation of time caused Poppy to always have been Belinda’s human daughter, leading Belinda to depart from the TARDIS to nurture her child.
Familiar Faces Returned
The Doctor had the Help of Some Old Friends
In his last Doctor Who story, “The Reality War,” the Fifteenth Doctor was not alone. As he hung onto a balcony about to plummet from the Bone Palace, all hope seemed lost. But just when it seemed escape was impossible, a door miraculously appeared in the palace’s facade behind him. To his surprise, Anita, the hotelier from Sandringham, whom he had met during the 2024 Christmas special “Joy to the World,” emerged. As hinted at the end of that episode, it was Anita who used the hotel key to find and rescue the Doctor in this critical moment.
Ever since I took over as manager of the Time Hotel, I’ve been keeping tabs on the Doctor. When I found him in a dire situation with the Wish World collapsing, I stepped in. Since the Time Hotel transcends Conrad’s wish boundaries, the Doctor and Belinda were unaffected by the Wish’s grasp. By maintaining portals to the Time Hotel at UNIT HQ, I managed to free UNIT from Conrad’s influence as well. Interestingly, the Doctor wasn’t the only character to reappear post “Joy to the World.” As he regenerated at the end of “The Reality War,” the Doctor peered out of the TARDIS doors into space, calling out to someone.
As I reminisced about all my past incarnations, I was taken aback when Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, seemingly out of nowhere, materialized in the TARDIS. She shared that a temporal rift had flung her from her own time into mine. Recognizing that I was resolute about regenerating, she couldn’t dissuade me but instead offered comforting words and some intricate advice on time travel to ensure my regeneration wouldn’t cause a catastrophe in the Time Vortex.
The Fifteenth Doctor Regenerates
Ncuti Gatwa Made a Surprise Doctor Who Exit
When Poppy ceased to exist, it was only Ruby who retained the memory of her. Initially, the Doctor thought that Ruby’s memories had been distorted when Conrad’s wish expired, but Ruby managed to convince him otherwise. She reminded him of a past event where she had vanished from existence, and he was the only one who could remember her. Realizing there had been a slight alteration in reality, the Doctor decided to manipulate time to restore Poppy. The only viable solution was for him to channel his regenerative energy into the Time Vortex, thereby triggering a regeneration. This action would signal the end of the Fifteenth Doctor’s existence and the beginning of the Sixteenth Doctor’s reign.
Following a short interaction with the relocated Thirteenth Doctor, the Fifteenth Doctor carried out his strategy, voluntarily inducing regeneration. After discharging regenerative power into the Time Vortex, he had merely enough moments left in his physical form to visit the reinstated Poppy and Belinda. After bidding farewell to his latest traveling companion, he piloted the TARDIS into space, where he admired Joy’s star. Expressing his time as the Doctor as “a sheer delight,” the Fifteenth Doctor was subsequently enveloped in a burst of regenerative energy. Upon completion of the regeneration process, the face of a familiar figure emerged that of Rose Tyler, companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors.
Viewers have observed that Piper is credited on “The Reality War” as “And Introducing Billie Piper,” without being identified as the Doctor, although this role has not been confirmed for her. In statements regarding the regeneration of the character, which was kept secret and came as a shock to viewers, both showrunner Russell T Davies and Piper have hinted that details about the “how, why, and who” of her return will be disclosed later. This could imply that Piper is not portraying the Sixteenth Doctor, a title yet to be officially given to her. It’s possible she is reprising her role as Rose Tyler or another character, and may have assumed the Doctor’s position during his regeneration. The future of Doctor Who remains uncertain, as Disney has not made a decision about continuing their collaboration with the BBC series. Whenever and however the sci-fi show resumes, further information will be shared about Billie Piper’s unexpected return to Doctor Who.
Doctor Who, Season 2, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Disney+.
