*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode The Story and the Engine.*
In the three-year gap since her last appearance in the centennial special titled “The Power of the Doctor,” actress Jo Martin unexpectedly reappeared in an episode of Doctor Who over the past weekend, featuring prominently in “The Story and the Engine.
In this installment, the character portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa finds himself in Lagos, unexpectedly captive within a barbershop setting. A pivotal scene unfolds when he undergoes a flashback to his past persona as the Runaway Doctor, which ultimately leads him to a vital revelation.
In the most recent installment of the spin-off series Doctor Who: Unveiled, executive producer Russell T Davies explained why now is an ideal moment for the return of Martin’s Doctor to the narrative.
He mentioned a tale based in Lagos that pays tribute to our character’s ethnic background. Essentially, the role of Jo Martin seemed conspicuously absent. It was past due to recognize her presence, and it was high time to confirm that she continues to be part of the storyline.
As a devoted cinephile, I’d like to emphasize: “Indeed, it’s high time we acknowledge that mythology persists, and this is beautifully encapsulated in an exceptionally mythological installment chronicling the lives of these men, spanning over centuries, much like the enduring tales told by our humble barber.
“It was essential for you to examine the Doctor’s life, and I understand that fact. Just a brief pause, and she’s thrilled to visit Cardiff and carry out this task. Therefore, it’s a great privilege.”
This version maintains the original meaning while making the text more natural and easy to read, using simpler syntax and vocabulary.
Meanwhile, Gatwa said it was “really nice having another Doctor on set” for the episode.
He added: “Unfortunately, we didn’t have as much time for conversation as we’d hoped, since things got quite hectic. However, we did manage to catch up and engage in one of those deep discussions that doctors often share, where we discussed the challenges of preserving the universe.
The Doctor’s new adventures will unfold next Saturday, the 17th of May. In the United Kingdom, you can catch the fresh episodes from 8am on Saturdays on BBC iPlayer, and they will also be aired later that day on BBC One. For those outside of the UK, the series is accessible on Disney+.
