Actor David Tennant from “Doctor Who,” on multiple occasions, has found himself at odds with author J.K. Rowling regarding transgender rights. Notably, various famous personalities such as and have voiced their opinions about Rowling’s stance, and now Tennant is joining the conversation as well.
During an episode of ITV1’s show, The Assembly, celebrities field questions from the audience. In this instance, Tennant was asked about trans rights and he drew a parallel to the anti-gay moral panic of the past. He explained, “When I was a teenager, the Thatcher government enacted something called Section 28, which aimed to prevent the discussion of homosexuality in schools.” Essentially, this meant that it was against the law to discuss being gay in school or imply that it could be a normal way of life.
Tennant stated, “We view that situation now as medieval and absurd, much like how the trans community is being marginalized and stigmatized today. He continued, “It’s been turned into a political game. When asked about J.K. Rowling particularly, Tennant, who played Barty Crouch Jr. in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,’ expressed his feelings frankly. ‘J.K. Rowling is a talented author who’s crafted amazing stories, and I harbor no animosity towards her. However, I hope that as a society, we can all simply allow people to exist without interference.’
Tennant Has Worn T-Shirts In Support Of The Trans Community
Tennant’s fashion choices have left no room for doubt about his stance on the issue. In 2023, he attended a premiere wearing a t-shirt that read, “Keep your hands off trans kids, you insane ones.” The following year, at another event, he donned a shirt in the colors of the trans flag with the words, “I stand in defense.” It has been widely speculated that one of Tennant’s children with his ‘Doctor Who’ co-star Georgia Moffett identifies as non-binary.
The tee-shirts grabbed attention in the UK. Anti-transgender activist Graham Linehan, who is renowned for writing shows like “The IT Crowd” and “Father Ted,” expressed online that he believed Tennant was an “abusive groomer” due to wearing the shirt. This resulted in him being dropped by his talent management agency. Later in 2025, Linehan was apprehended for harassment and property damage, and he has openly admitted that backing anti-transgender causes negatively impacted his marriage.
New episodes of Doctor Who air Saturdays on BBC One in the UK and on Disney+ worldwide.
