Without a doubt, the surprising and confusing ending of the latest Doctor Who season, where Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor transformed into Billie Piper, left quite a few admirers of this cherished science fiction show in a state of astonishment and bewilderment.
It seems that we can now include former Doctor Peter Davison in this group, as he’s expressed his confusion about the climactic scene from season finale The Reality War during a recent conversation with Starburst magazine.
He shared with the publication that he’s unsure of Billie Piper’s current activities since all he has gathered is second-hand information without any specific details. To him, the concept appears utterly bizarre and bewildering.
I’m not convinced she’s the Doctor. It seems more like a surprise element added to the finale, intended to shock viewers and create confusion, like ‘Wow, what’s this?’ And then it appears as if they’re saying, ‘Leave her alone.’
He stated: “I found her an exceptional companion, yet she’s thriving in her profession with numerous opportunities available. It confounds me as to why she’d willingly opt to return to Cardiff for a year on her own accord.
Indeed, it remains uncertain whether this regeneration – a fact that was previously unconfirmed before the episode – implies that Piper might take over the TARDIS as the potential new Doctor if the series is prolonged for another season.
It’s intriguing that an indication about whether Piper has truly taken on the role of the Doctor wasn’t shown at the end of the episode, implying that this mystery will likely keep viewers guessing and discussing for some time.
If she were to take on the role of The Doctor, it would realize a prediction made by Christopher Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor, about three years ago.
In 2022, Eccleston mentioned prior to Gatwa’s casting: “I told someone today in the lounge area that Russell T Davies will return, correct? In my opinion, Billie Piper would make a great Doctor.
“Catherine Tate’s great but, I think there’s your Doctor.

I find it intriguing that she’s now the Doctor after being an assistant. ‘How can this be?’ I enjoy the thought of it causing a stir in the established narrative, or as some might say, creating contradictions. ‘This won’t work! It’s disruptive, it’s challenging!’
Following the broadcast of The Reality War, Piper expressed her feelings in a statement: “I’ve never hidden my affection for this series, and I’ve often shared my desire to revisit the Whoniverse because it holds some of my most cherished memories. So, when the chance arose to embark on another TARDIS adventure, it was an offer I couldn’t resist. However, the details – who, how, why, and when – you’ll simply have to be patient and find out later.
Doctor Who and Doctor Who: Unleashed are available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
