Doctor Who Star’s Shocking Secret: Why She Thought She Was ‘Terrible’ On The Show

Caroline John, the actress who played Doctor Who, shared memories of how her mother’s involvement in the series significantly transformed following initial apprehensions. At first, she felt uneasy about her performance during her 1970 tenure, worrying that she wasn’t very skillful.

As a passionate movie reviewer, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming release of Season 7 from the beloved BBC sci-fi series, Doctor Who. This season pairs the charismatic Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee, with the practical and no-nonsense scientist character, Liz Shaw, who was John’s companion during their adventures through time and space. I can hardly wait to revisit these timeless episodes in stunning high definition on the new Blu-ray set!

At a showing of her mom’s debut story “Spearhead from Space” at the BFI Southbank, Daisy Ashford, John’s daughter, shared how the way John left “Doctor Who” influenced her initial perceptions of the show.

Ashford stated, “She appears to have departed with a touch of controversy.” It’s rumored that her extensive knowledge and intelligence were seen as too much for the role they wanted. They desired someone who could question the Doctor more effectively, so she felt insufficient and ultimately distanced herself from the position.

During the gap between the seventh and eighth seasons of Doctor Who, the character Liz was removed from the screen. Producers Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks felt that her advanced intellect and scientific background made it difficult for her to serve as a relatable stand-in for viewers.

1978 saw John openly acknowledge her character’s portrayal as “constraining”. She elaborated that initially, she was thrilled about embodying an intelligent female character. However, she found out that the directors were more interested in having a sexually attractive persona instead.

After attending Doctor Who conventions where she met fans of her character, Ashford found that these interactions significantly enhanced her connection with the show.

Years had passed before she attended her first convention in Manchester, after being repeatedly asked. The audience gave her a standing ovation, making her exclaim, “Wow, these people appreciate my work!” Subsequently, she was welcomed back into the family once more.

She greatly valued that experience and enjoyed interacting with her fans. At first, it wasn’t a significant aspect of her life, but when she re-entered the community, it became incredibly important to her.

Currently, actress Sarah Sutton is stepping into the character of Liz Shaw, originally played by John, in audio dramas produced by Big Finish. She refers to this chance as a “gift” bestowed upon her by her deceased mother, who sadly passed away in 2012.

It was a great honor for me to receive the offer, as I understand its significance. Sharing it with her makes it even more special, and I find this heartwarming.

Instead of being challenging to develop, Liz’s character can now be delved into comprehensively, she proposed.

In the 1970s, Liz was a pioneer for women, showing great independence and strength. While she did need to yield to men on some occasions, it was not something she gladly accepted.

The authors at Big Finish have skillfully delved into less-explored aspects of her character. It’s remarkable when creators have opportunities to further reveal hidden facets of a character that were underdeveloped in the past. I find this development absolutely fascinating.
