After a long wait of 35 years, a story initially abandoned from the popular Doctor Who series is now being brought to life. Big Finish has revealed that they will be creating a full-cast audio drama inspired by the missing Doctor Who serial titled “Alixion.
In a planned 1990 season that was cancelled by the BBC due to declining ratings, Robin Mukherjee was poised to make history as the first person of color to pen a Doctor Who episode featuring the Seventh Doctor and his companion Ace (Sophie Aldred). The storyline would have had them visiting a luxurious spa, unwittingly getting entangled in an attempt by another extraterrestrial being, dubbed The Queen of the Hive, to seize interplanetary power. This alien entity, capable of manipulating the duo’s deepest fears, aimed to siphon the Time Lord’s regenerative energy by exploiting their darkest apprehensions.
Big Finish Is Producing a Lost Seventh Doctor Serial
Mukherjee pondered over the significant role that “Alixion” played in his career, as John Nathan-Turner, the renowned producer of Doctor Who, provided him with his inaugural TV script, following his experience in writing for both radio and theater.
He clearly recollects the tightly packed rooms within an unremarkable office building on Shepherds Bush Green, a hotbed of creativity filled with brilliant ideas in the presence of John, Andrew [Cartmel], Ben [Aaronovitch], Ian [Briggs], Graeme [Curry], Rona [Munro] and others. Overwhelmed by their talent and imagination, he reminisced. “We creatively explored the cosmos and time travel, weaving intricate and fantastical stories for what I believe to be one of the most exceptional Doctor/companion duos in the series,” he said.
Originally, the author wrote: “The cancellation of the next series terminated my commission. However, the narrative has persistently lingered on the outskirts of my creative mind. Since then, I’ve primarily focused on writing grounded, realistic dramas, ranging from medical shows to art-house films. The opportunity to unleash my imaginative energy into the cosmos has been an inexpressible delight. What took me aback most about crafting this tale was how much of it, drawn from countless discussions, had just been yearning to be shared. It seems as though a journey that started in the delicate days of my initial work has finally reached its conclusion.”
“After the show I was working on got cancelled, I couldn’t continue with my commission. But the story kept popping up in my mind. Since then, I’ve mainly written realistic dramas like medical shows and art-house films. It’s been wonderful to let my imagination soar. What surprised me was how much of this story, which I had gathered from various conversations, was just waiting to be shared. It feels like a journey that started long ago has finally come full circle.
“Being able to launch my creative molecules into the stratosphere has been an immeasurable joy.”
McCoy and Aldred once again took on their characters as The Doctor and Ace for a two-hour audio production. This production was skillfully captured at The Soundhouse, situated in the heart of London.

Alixion” joins the ongoing collection of unreleased Doctor Who stories, known as Big Finish’s The Lost Stories series. These narratives were initially conceived for the classic series but never saw screen time. In the instance of “Alixion,” it was penned during a period of close examination, similar to the level of scrutiny Doctor Who is undergoing nowadays.
It’s been mentioned this week that the show might be wrapping up after its second season due to decreasing viewership. Currently, it seems that the deal with Disney+ for worldwide distribution is ending without any signs of renewal. Some speculate that Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Doctor, may no longer hold the role, and there are rumors that the BBC could be taking over the character.
A representative from the BBC has clarified that they haven’t yet decided on season three of “Doctor Who” as it depends on how season two performs, and any other suggestions about its future are merely speculative.
The TV Version of ‘Alixion’ Would Have Aired in Classic Doctor Who’s 26th Season
- David A. McIntee, who later wrote many Doctor Who spinoff novels, conceived a Lovecraftian horror serial called ‘Avatar’ for season 26. The story was set in 1927, featuring body-snatching monsters.
- “Illegal Alien,” written by the duo Mike Tucker and Robert Perry, was going to be a three-part Cyberman story.
- Marc Platt penned two separate serial pitches for season 26 — a return to Gallifrey to introduce The Doctor’s ancestors in “Lungbarrow” and a visit to 19th-century Tsarist Russia in “Shrine.”
In the interim, enthusiasts of “Doctor Who” have the opportunity to experience “Doctor Who: The Lost Stories – Alixion” earlier than expected. It is now available for purchase as a CD or digital download, with an official release slated for September 2025.
