Doctor Who theory could solve year-long Mrs Flood mystery

As a dedicated Doctor Who fan with over three decades of Whovian wisdom under my belt, I must say that the enigma surrounding Mrs Flood has certainly piqued my interest. The intrigue started during the 2023 Christmas special and has only grown stronger since then.

I’ve been following this show long enough to know that nothing is ever as it seems in the Doctor Who universe, so I can’t help but entertain theories about Mrs Flood being a Time Lord or someone from the Doctor’s past. The recent theory suggesting Anita could be a young Mrs Flood has definitely caught my attention, especially considering the shared name and playful naming trends we’ve seen in recent seasons.

I’m not one to jump to conclusions without some solid evidence, but I must admit that the name connection and the continuation of the Chair Night tradition are intriguing. If Anita has been continuing the tradition with Mrs Flood, it could explain why Mrs Flood knows about TARDISes. After all, the Doctor did spend quite a bit of time at the Sandringham Hotel!

As for the chairs, I’d say it’s definitely tenuous, but still worth considering. Sitting and chatting for hours on Chair Night might just be Mrs Flood’s way of continuing her tradition with someone she holds dear.

With confirmation that we’ll find out more about Mrs Flood in the next season of Doctor Who, I can hardly wait to see what other surprises this show has in store for us! And who knows, maybe we’ll even learn that Mrs Flood collects miniature TARDISes! Now, if only we could get her to reveal her secret stash during Chair Night… That would be a real game-changer!

Ever since the 2023 Christmas special titled “The Church on Ruby Road,” ardent Doctor Who enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating learning more about Mrs. Flood.

In a captivating and undeniably flamboyant debut, Anita Dobson’s character portrayal of Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) as the enigmatic neighbor next door left an indelible mark in the Doctor Who universe. Towards the end of the Christmas special, she intriguingly broke the fourth wall, querying, “Have you never seen a TARDIS before?” followed by a playful wink.

At that instance, it became clear that there was a depth to Mrs. Flood beyond her initial impression, and her reappearance in season 14 underscored this, notably during the Empire of Death finale.

Could it be that Mrs. Flood is a Time Lord, perhaps someone from the Doctor’s history? While nothing is set in stone yet, speculation among fans has been intense following the 2024 Christmas special, “Joy to the World.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve been pondering over an intriguing theory regarding a captivating character from the recent episode: Anita, skillfully portrayed by Steph de Whalley. Some fellow fans have posited that this enigmatic figure might be none other than a younger version of Mrs. Flood, hinting at a potential comeback in future episodes.

At present, we don’t have substantial proof to rely on, but there are some subtle indications. For instance, the name Anita, which is common to both Steph de Whalley’s character Anita and actress Dobson’s character Mrs. Flood.

In the past, it wouldn’t have seemed likely that an actor’s name would influence plot developments. However, in more contemporary productions, showrunner Russell T Davies has been creatively incorporating actors’ names, particularly noticeable with actress Susan Twist (also known as Susan Triad), who was revealed to be Sutekh.

Joy to the World could also explain how Mrs Flood knows what a TARDIS is.

Instead of being a Time Lord herself, she might just be the Doctor describing the small figurines found in his hotel room, explaining their significance and why they evoke memories of home. Given the amount of time they spent together during his stay at the Sandringham Hotel that year, it wouldn’t be surprising if these items held special meaning for him.

In the course of my unforgettable year alongside Anita at the Sandringham Hotel, we established a unique custom we dubbed “Chair Nights.” These were evenings where we’d park ourselves in our favorite seats and engage in hours-long conversations, creating cherished memories.

Is it possible that Anita might have maintained this tradition even in her later years, given how often Mrs. Flood is spotted relaxing on a camping chair on her veranda?

It’s been verified that additional information about Mrs. Flood will be revealed in the upcoming season of Doctor Who, regardless of whether the current theory holds water or not.

Dobson continued by expressing, “After being in the dark for such a long time, I’ve grown to enjoy it! The uncertainty of what might occur is actually part of the excitement.

Not too long now!
