Doctor Who to Launch CBeebies Animated Spin-Off: TARDIS Takes a Trip to Preschool!

It has been confirmed that the TARDIS is embarking on a journey to CBeebies, since the news broke about a preschool-targeted animated spin-off of Doctor Who.

At present, the BBC is on the hunt for an independent production studio to develop and broadcast a standalone series that will operate separately from their primary program.

For the very first time, a series set within the Doctor Who universe is being produced specifically for the CBeebies channel, marking an exciting new chapter in the show’s history that includes both its animation and children’s programming roots.

According to Patricia Hidalgo, the Head of Children’s and Education, “CBeebies invites everyone, even the Doctor, to join us!

It’s only fair that our younger fans also enjoy the enchantment and mystery of the Doctor, as this popular series captivates millions globally, so let’s present them with an entirely fresh presentation style.

We’re thrilled about this fantastic chance! We invite businesses to present their ideas for this fresh endeavor, as we remain dedicated and eager to support the UK’s thriving animation sector.

The series will run for 26 episodes in 2027/2028 and a further 26 episodes in 2028/2029.

The comprehensive pitch overview highlights essential characteristics of Doctor Who that the BBC is keen on preserving. These include emblematic aspects such as the Doctor being an extraterrestrial from Gallifrey, possessing the TARDIS time machine, and utilizing the sonic screwdriver tool.

The character of the Doctor is described as being exceptionally intelligent in scientific matters, inspiring for the audience, guided by a solid ethical code, and preferring to use intellect, wit, and negotiation to settle disputes rather than resorting to physical fights.

Indeed, I couldn’t imagine being part of the Doctor’s journey without their fellow travelers by my side! The invitation clearly seeks individuals who are friendly, approachable, and capable of working together with the Doctor to tackle a variety of challenges we may encounter.

Regarding the legendary Doctor Who monsters, it seems they won’t instill much fear under the bed covers. Instead, the villains in the animated series are expected to be more playful or clumsy, offering the Doctor challenges that can be handled without danger or intimidation.

BBC Studios will distribute the series.

On more than one occasion, Doctor Who has created spin-off shows aimed at kids. Previously, Elisabeth Sladen returned to play Sarah Jane Smith in the popular children’s show, The Sarah Jane Adventures, which aired on CBBC.

The series aired for five seasons between 2007 and 2011, and then in 2020, there was a farewell special that marked the end of the character and actress Sladen, who had passed away previously.

More information can be found on the BBC Commissioning site.

Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Disney+ outside of the UK.
