As a cinephile with over three decades of watching Doctor Who and being captivated by its magical universe, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming audio drama box set featuring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor! The return of Matthew Jacobs, who penned the 1996 movie, is a delightful surprise that takes me back to the days when I first fell in love with this iconic series.
As a die-hard fan of the Time Lord’s cinematic adventures, I’m thrilled to share that Paul McGann will reprise his role as the Eighth Doctor in an upcoming Doctor Who audio drama box set! However, it’s not just the Doctor who’s returning – the writer behind the 1996 film where McGann made his debut is also coming back to weave more tales for this sprawling sci-fi franchise.
It’s been verified that Matthew Jacobs is responsible for penning one of the tales included in the collection, known as “Puccini and the Doctor.”
Actor Tim McInnerny, known for his roles in Blackadder, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who: Planet of the Ood, will make a special appearance as a renowned composer. Additionally, characters Charley Pollard (played by India Fisher) and Lady Audacity Montague (portrayed by Jaye Griffiths) are set to accompany the Doctor on this three-part adventure.
David Richardson, the producer, remarked: “It’s fantastic that Matthew Jacobs is back for our series to pen ‘Puccini and the Doctor.’ Such dedication is evident as he even wakes up at 4am in LA to catch our recording sessions!”
“He’s shared an enchanting and creative story with us, reminiscent of the style seen in the Eighth Doctor’s television film.”
Jacobs himself commented: “This is my first Doctor Who story since 1996. The Doctor holds a special place in my life, and it’s been intriguing to observe the series evolve over time. Paul has brilliantly maintained the Doctor’s presence at Big Finish, and he has developed into such a complex character compared to when we began.”
I was thrilled beyond belief when script editor Matt Fitton invited me to create a narrative. We talked about how this rendition of Paul’s Doctor leans more towards the television movie Doctor – curious and less bitter than his character evolves during the Time War.
He went on to explain: “What resonated most with me was a concept involving some leftover matters from the TV film. In the film, the Doctor laments that Puccini didn’t get to complete Turandot before his death, which caused him great distress in his later years. I wanted to craft a narrative exploring the ways we utilize music and our pursuit of love.”
The collection known as “Deadly Strangers” includes narratives penned by Lisa McMullin (from her work “Women’s Day Off”) and the writing duo of Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle (who authored “The Gloaming”).
The Eighth Doctor’s thrilling adventures in “Doctor Who – The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Deadly Strangers” are now up for pre-order! This collector’s item comes as a 3-disc CD box set (plus digital download) priced at £22.99, or you can opt for the digital-only version for £18.99. Both options are exclusively available at bigfinish.com.
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
