Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode Lucky Day.
In the most recent installment of Doctor Who, Team UNIT made their appearance, but keen-eyed viewers may have noticed that a significant character was missing from the scene.
Despite the return of Kate Stewart, Colonel Ibrahim, and Shirley Anne Bingham, Mel Bush was conspicuously absent from the gathering this time.
First, Mel made an appearance as a companion on Doctor Who from 1986 to 1987, then briefly reappeared in 2022 and has been seen in multiple episodes of the recent seasons.
Her latest appearances suggest that she was enlisted in a global military entity known as UNIT. This led to her engaging in combat against extraordinary perils, initially with the Fourteenth Doctor played by David Tennant, followed by the Fifteenth Doctor portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa.

In the latest installment titled “Lucky Day,” the character known as Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) seeks comfort from UNIT after strange electrical irregularities disrupt a seemingly peaceful English hamlet during her visit, causing unease.
In a turn of events, Ruby tries to reach Mel, yet it’s Kate who answers the phone, informing Ruby that Mel is currently abroad.
“Mel’s on her way to Sydney,” says Kate. “There’s something strange happening in the harbour.”
After Mel’s task, there was no further news of her returning to the UK, as it seems her assignment was significant enough that she didn’t come back when UNIT was under attack by Conrad Clark, a cunning swindler who manipulates digital platforms to spread harmful conspiracy theories for monetary benefits.
Could it be that, regarding the unusual occurrence at the harbor which may signal a potential danger arising from the waters, will we perhaps discover further insights into what Mel was examining in the upcoming Doctor Who extension titled “The Struggle between Land and Sea”?
In the episode “Lucky Day,” neither Morris Gibbons (Lenny Rush), another scientific advisor for UNIT, nor Rose Noble (Yasmin Finney), their most recent recruit, make an appearance. Given that UNIT was under investigation during this episode, it might be best if they weren’t present, or else Colonel Kate Stewart could have faced some trouble regarding potential child labor violations…
The Doctor’s adventures will continue this coming Saturday, 10th May, on BBC One. You can catch the latest episodes starting at 8am every Saturday on BBC iPlayer within the United Kingdom. For viewers outside of the UK, you can find the series on Disney+.
