This week’s Doctor Who episode, titled “The Story and the Engine,” was penned by celebrated poet and playwright Inua Ellams, marking one of his initial forays into on-screen writing.
Ellams shared that since he could recall television programs, he’s been an avid fan of the series, starting to follow it when he was ten years old, right here in Nigeria.
He elaborated, saying that the program inspired him to imagine more than his everyday life and escape into something greater. Writing for the show was an awe-inspiring experience, like reaching divinity itself; it was both humbling and exhilarating in its blasphemous magnificence, and he can’t wait to reveal his tale to everyone.
Currently, Ellams disclosed the guidance he received upon entering the program from a seasoned writer familiar with its intricacies – previously serving as the showrunner, Chris Chibnall.

Ellams shared his thoughts about collaborating on Doctor Who, saying, “I truly enjoyed working alongside Russell [T Davies, the show’s present producer].
In my experience, Chris Chibnall once pointed out something intriguing about Doctor Who: “It’s a blend of science fiction and horror, yet it appeals to both young minds at eight and older audiences alike.” This thought stayed with me throughout the process.
How can one find a balance between something that may scare an eight-year-old yet is still enjoyable and thrilling? And how do you respect the past while introducing fresh ideas for future generations? It was both challenging and delightful to explore this conundrum.
The Story and the Engine
In the bustling city of Lagos, the enigmatic Barber holds sway. The puzzled Doctor uncovers a realm where tales possess potent force; can he thwart the sinister Spider and dismantle its lethal network of retribution?
This episode moves us beyond the midpoint of the current season, leaving only three additional episodes to air following it: The Intergalactic Music Competition, Wishing Realm, and The Battle of Reality.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the remaining two episodes will be shown simultaneously in cinemas on 31st May, similar to how the two-part finale was screened last year.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! The next installment of Doctor Who is all set to unfold this coming Saturday (10th May) on good ol’ BBC One. For those in the UK, you can catch the latest episodes as early as 8am on Saturdays, right here on the BBC iPlayer. And for my friends outside the UK, fear not! The series is readily available on Disney+. Can’t wait to join the TARDIS on its next adventure!
