Doctor Who’s Derek Jacobi and Yasmin Finney join interactive film Hello Stranger

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of interactive storytelling, I must say that the announcement of “Hello Stranger” has certainly piqued my interest! With a cast as diverse and talented as this, it’s hard not to be excited about the potential of this project.

Notable actors Derek Jacobi and Yasmin Finney (from Heartstopper) are part of an exciting, upcoming interactive production called “Hello Stranger,” along with other well-known figures.

As reported by Deadline, Laura Whitmore, who was once the host of Love Island, as well as Kulvinder Ghir, a renowned actor from Goodness Gracious Me, have both agreed to join the cast. Previously, George Blagden (known for his role in Vikings), Christina Wolfe (from The Ark) and Danny Griffin (FATE: The Winx Saga) were already confirmed to be part of this production.

As someone who has spent years working in the tech industry and living in a smart home myself, I am particularly intrigued by the upcoming project from writer/director Paul Raschid, titled “Techno-Hermit.” The story follows the life of a man named Cam who lives in an electronically automated smart home.

A more detailed summary goes like this: “On the site Hello Stranger, a platform for random video chats, Cam engages in conversations with various individuals. At some point, he comes across a mysterious person wearing a mask and speaking with a modified voice.”

Overwhelmed, Cam hangs up the call, discovering a mystery intruder had tampered with his smart home system and secured the house. The unknown individual warns Cam that he must triumph in three rounds of challenges or face the consequences – “it’s checkmate.”

“For Cam to stay alive, viewers need to participate in and decide the outcomes of the three games. However, a single incorrect decision might result in a tragic outcome.”

Beyond the current interactive project, Raschid has another exciting venture in progress – he’s produced a horror/thriller movie named “Run.” This chilling production is slated for release in 2025, and it tells an intriguing story where a well-known fitness influencer’s ordinary morning run transforms into a desperate struggle for survival as murderers appear to be pursuing her without any discernible motive.

Despite the significant impact of the “Bandersnatch” episode from Black Mirror in 2018, which many anticipated would spark a wave of interactive film and TV, this hasn’t fully materialized yet. Netflix has continued to explore this concept with shows like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, as well as films such as Choose Love, but the widespread adoption predicted isn’t quite there yet.

Time will tell if the “choose your own adventure” style of storytelling will continue to captivate audiences over the long run.
