Doctor Who’s First Companion Susan Returns After 40 Years in Jaw-Dropping Episode

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode The Interstellar Song Contest.

In a Eurovision-inspired Doctor Who episode set 900 years from now, it’s unlikely that there would be numerous individuals capable of outshining others.

But Doctor Who’s first ever companion returning after more than 40 years away? That’ll do it!

Indeed, Carole Ann Ford, famously known as Susan Foreman, the Doctor’s granddaughter who initially traveled with William Hartnell in the TARDIS during the inaugural episodes of Doctor Who, has finally reappeared in the most recent episode titled “The Interstellar Song Contest.

During the entire episode, Susan seems to manifest as a spectral figure before Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, giving the impression that she is speaking with him from within the TARDIS.

Initially, she shows up following the space heist by Freddie Fox’s character, who dismantles the protective barrier during the competition, causing everyone, including the Doctor, to drift away into the cosmos. Upon thawing him from his frozen slumber, Susan urges the Doctor: “Retreat, Grandfather, retreat!

She implies that she might reappear in the series later, as she says, “Look for me,” and subsequently appears when the Doctor discusses safeguarding Belinda and vows to bring her back home.

In this thrilling installment, I found myself on the edge of my seat as The Doctor teetered towards a sinister path, poised to exact revenge upon Fox’s Kid for his lethal plot. However, just when things seemed bleakest, our compassionate heroine, Susan, intervened, her very presence serving as a beacon that pulled The Doctor back from the brink and prevented any further harm.

As I stand there with Belinda (Varada Sethu), almost on the verge of sharing my extraordinary findings, I choose instead to chuckle it away.

Although no official confirmation has been made, it seems plausible that Susan might make further appearances, perhaps in the final episodes titled “Wish World” and “The Reality War”.

Susan’s return to Doctor Who has been a long time coming for fans – and for Ford herself.

She was the original traveler who embarked on adventures with the First Doctor (played by William Hartnell) when they first set foot in the TARDIS. She left the Doctor Who series in 1964.

In the series, Susan develops feelings for a human named David Campbell, and the Doctor concludes that she should remain with David. As a result, he bars her access to the TARDIS, stranding her on Earth.

Ford made an appearance once more, this time in Doctor Who’s 20th anniversary special titled “The Five Doctors” and the Children in Need special “Dimensions in Time.” Last season, Susan was mentioned in two episodes, sparking much excitement among fans about her potential return. However, her official comeback to the show for “The Interstellar Song Contest” truly is a significant event.

The actress has also been vocal about her wishes for Susan to return.

Thankfully, Ford and her fans have had their wish come true!

On Saturday, May 24th, Doctor Who resumes its journey. In the United Kingdom, fresh episodes will be accessible starting at 8am every Saturday on BBC iPlayer, with rebroadcasts on BBC One later in the day. For those living outside the UK, you can find the series on Disney+.
