At the conclusion of the Doctor Who episode “Journey’s End,” when Freema Agyeman‘s character Martha Jones was observed departing with Captain Jack Harkness, numerous spectators anticipated that she would have a significant part in the ensuing season of Torchwood.
In the spin-off’s second season, she starred in three episodes, but when it came to its third installment, Children of Earth, she was conspicuously absent. During the initial episode of this season, Jack hinted that Martha had taken a break from her work at UNIT for a vacation.
Previously undisclosed information emerged showing that Agyeman was intended for the spin-off, yet the plans fell through. Recently, in a discussion at MegaCon Orlando, the actor disclosed the reasons behind this.
According to Collider, Agyeman mentioned that she had originally planned (or intended) to join Torchwood permanently following her role in Doctor Who.
As a film enthusiast, I found myself caught in a whirlwind of scripts and revisions, with the world outside demanding attention too – contracts, among other things. It was as if there was an endless stream of tasks, leaving me to wonder if I’d ever find time for my creative vision. Sometimes, it seems, we have a clear path laid out in our minds, only to discover that the universe has its own plans and steers us in different directions.
She added: “Later on, a chance to try out for Law & Order presented itself, and I’m quite fond of this show. It’s unusual for us to adapt American series, usually it’s the other way around.
In the same period, the plan was for the project to head to the UK, and Dick Wolf was involved. This made me eager to be part of the conversation. Concurrently, an opportunity arose, and I decided to pursue it instead.
After Agyeman’s appearance in “Children of Earth” and “Miracle Day,” Torchwood continued for another two seasons, but ultimately came to a conclusion at its end.
Fans continue to eagerly anticipate Freema Agyeman’s comeback as Martha Jones on Doctor Who. Following the conclusion of Russell T Davies’ initial run, several cast members such as Billie Piper, Catherine Tate, and Bernard Cribbins have reprised their roles. However, since her last appearance in the 2010 special The End of Time Part 2, Agyeman has yet to make another guest appearance on the series.
Recently, viewers found themselves reminiscing about Agyeman’s early days on Doctor Who. Initially cast in a minor role as Adeola, she later became a regular character as Martha Jones, the new companion. In their first full-time appearance together in the episode “Smith and Jones,” they shared a line of dialogue that revealed they were cousins.
It was affirmed by Davies that the identical scenario transpired during the selection of Varada Sethu for her role as the new companion Belinda in season 15; however, she had previously made an appearance in a minor role as Mundy Flynn in season 14.
In a conversation with SFX magazine, Davies clarified that since Sethu won’t return as Mundy Flynn, it’s best to keep things straightforward.
In simpler terms, “When you have an exceptional actor like Freema, you often find yourself needing a suitable co-star. I was deeply impressed by the 15th edit of Boom and found myself really appreciating her performance.
Each time I observe her, I find myself thinking, “Wow, she’s incredibly intelligent.” Indeed, I genuinely believe she is exceptionally bright. Previously, while watching her, I would lament, “What a pity we can’t collaborate with her once more.
Doctor Who season 15 will be released in May 2025.
