In my personal opinion, the Ruby Sunday-centric episode of Doctor Who‘s season 15, titled “Lucky Day,” has garnered high praise from critics and fans alike. This thrilling installment left viewers on the edge of their seats with its nail-biting cliffhanger that kept everyone guessing until the very end. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who or just enjoy a good sci-fi mystery, “Lucky Day” is definitely worth checking out!
As a devoted film enthusiast, I found myself captivated by an episode that primarily focused on the character Ruby (Millie Gibson), who was navigating a fresh chapter in her life following her thrilling escapades with the Doctor. The initial vibe was optimistic and things appeared to be running smoothly. However, even the most astute of us couldn’t have predicted the shocking revelation that Ruby’s partner, Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King), was not only a cunning trickster but also a fanatic peddling conspiracy theories, with an ulterior motive to bring down UNIT.
I tuned into BBC One last Saturday evening, specifically at 7:10 PM, to catch the fourth episode of the current season of Doctor Who. To my delight, this intriguing installment garnered an overnight viewership of approximately 1.5 million, making it a captivating and popular choice among viewers.
The current viewership count isn’t complete yet as it hasn’t been combined with views from iPlayer, where the debut occurred at 8am on Saturday before its airing on BBC One. A consolidated total (which considers catch-up views and devices too) will be released at a future date.

Indeed, many viewers are expected to watch the episode on iPlayer in the following days. Although these numbers don’t give a complete picture or consider people’s streaming behavior, they represent the lowest overnight rating for the series thus far.
58 million viewers watched the previous episode during the late-night hours, marking a record low viewership for Lux.
On Saturdays, Lucky Day ranked third among BBC One’s evening programs, following the Celebrity Special of Hit List and Casualty. However, the overall viewership for the channel was relatively low that night, as none of the broadcast shows managed to surpass the 2 million viewer mark.
In the summary of Lucky Day, we find Ruby Sunday grappling with daily life on Earth after parting ways with the Doctor. However, when a sinister entity known as the Shreek surfaces, posing a grave danger, Ruby and UNIT must race against time to rescue her boyfriend Conrad from its clutches.
Apart from Ruby’s reappearance, the episode also unraveled the enigma behind the Doctor’s initial search for Belinda and featured a much-adored character making a memorable guest appearance.
In the discussion about the specific episode, writer Pete McTighe commented that although the Doctor is indeed present, the episode primarily revolves around Ruby. He found Millie Gibson’s performance during her initial season captivating, so having the chance to delve deeper into her character was an exciting opportunity.
In every instance of Doctor Who except for Sarah Jane Smith, we’ve rarely investigated the consequences when a companion stops traveling with the Doctor, or the long-term effects of their adventures on them. It was delightful to delve into this intriguing facet of the characters.
The Doctor’s adventures continue next Saturday, specifically on the 10th of May, on BBC One in the United Kingdom. Starting at 8am on Saturdays, fresh episodes can be found on BBC iPlayer. For those residing outside of the UK, the series can be accessed on Disney+.
