The episode “The Well” suggests that the monster from “Midnight” may have survived Shaya’s sacrifice, indicating its potential return in future episodes. Similar instances of recurring monsters can be seen throughout “Doctor Who”, where some creatures make multiple appearances while others are brought back for additional stories. Therefore, it appears that a new creature has been added to the roster of recurring villains following the end of “The Well”.
Initially appearing in “Midnight” in 2008, the enigmatic monster was resurrected by showrunner Russell T Davies for this tale due to the shared characteristics between the mining planet and the elusive villain. Throughout the episode, it appears that the captain, Shaya, found a formidable adversary when she sacrificed herself to destroy the creature. However, the closing scenes hint that the monster may have survived and escaped.
How The Monster Most Likely Escaped In Doctor Who Season 15, Episode 3
The Monster Narrowly Avoided Death In Doctor Who
The “Midnight” beast may have found ways to evade the same fate as Shaya, even though the surviving crew members consented to destroy the planet following evacuation. The closing scene suggests that the creature might be aboard the ship with the crew, implying it could travel anywhere, regardless of its home planet’s destruction. Shaya thought that wounding Belinda and causing her near-death would transfer the creature to her, which is why she then rushed towards the well and jumped in. However, there’s a chance that the monster might have chosen to bypass Shaya and target another crew member instead.
However, the episode seems to suggest that the monster was passed on to Shaya, suggested by the swift camera movement and Shaya’s facial expression which hints at her awareness of its presence. If this is true, then Shaya managed to capture the creature, but later on, either during her journey towards the well or after her demise at the bottom, the creature split up and made its way back to the team. Given that it had previously escaped from the well, even if Shaya created some distance between the monster and the crew, it might not have been substantial enough for the creature to stay away.
We Don’t Know For Certain That The Monster At The End Of “The Well” Is The Same One
There Could Be More Monsters From The Well
Apart from the two theories suggested earlier about the monster’s survival and escape, there’s a third possibility I find quite plausible instead. This might not have been the exact same monster that latched onto Belinda, but rather another member of the same species. It’s unusual for an alien to live in isolation, but the Doctor could be the exception to this rule.
As the Doctor encountered merely one being in “Midnight,” I strongly suspect he believed this was the same entity. However, if these monsters possessed a collective consciousness or there existed another creature of their kind, they might have latched onto another crew member and departed the planet following Shaya’s sacrifice. In this manner, the beast from “Midnight” skillfully evaded detection on potential hosts like Belinda or myself, who would be quick to identify its presence, and managed to sneak away. Yet, the destiny of these creatures is still uncertain and will likely unfold in upcoming episodes of my beloved series, Doctor Who.
