Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode Lux.
In this latest installment of Doctor Who, it’s me who’s thrilled to see the return of the formidable Mrs. Flood, portrayed by Anita Dobson. And let me tell you, her performance in this episode is downright chilling.
This season, Dobson’s character will be seen each week, and her appearance on Lux suggests that the world as we know it for the Doctor might be coming to an end, or at least concluding for him.
As the climax of the unusually self-referential episode unfolds, Mrs. Flood unexpectedly appears in 1950s Miami. She gestures towards the vanishing TARDIS and tells Tommy Lee and his mother, “I’d say you’ll thoroughly enjoy this performance if you give it a watch.
“Better warn you, though, limited run only. Show ends May 24th.”
Absolutely, on May 24th, 2025, is the day when Belinda Chandra (portrayed by Varada Sethu) is eagerly working towards returning home.
However, an unidentified entity seems to be preventing the TARDIS from touching down at that specific time, compelling the Doctor (portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa) to opt for a circuitous route instead.
24th May will also be the date that the season finale airs – so watch this space (and time!).
At the conclusion of this season, it has been made clear that the true identity of Mrs. Flood will be disclosed, thereby resolving a long-standing enigma dating back to the 2023 Christmas special on Ruby Road titled “The Church”.
She is the exact opposite – this person seems to be extremely self-aware… She revealed her true identity towards the end of the last season, standing on a rooftop with a parasol, in a white fur coat, amidst snow, proclaiming, ‘I’m going to cause utter fear!’ – so she has dropped all pretenses, essentially.
In what manner does Mrs. Flood keep appearing at various points in time and space, and what seems to be her intention towards the Doctor? We’re eagerly waiting for the truth to unfold!
On the upcoming Saturday, the 26th of April, Doctor Who resumes at 7:20 PM on BBC One. In the United Kingdom, fresh episodes will be accessible from 8 AM on Saturdays via BBC iPlayer. For viewers outside of the UK, you can catch the series on Disney+.
