Doctor Who’s Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat reveal their favourite Christmas specials

As a lifelong fan of Doctor Who who has witnessed its regenerations and transformations over the years, I must say that both Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have created some truly magical Christmas specials. Their shared love for the series is evident in their heartfelt choices of favorite episodes, each one holding a special place in the annals of Doctor Who history.

Fans of the show Doctor Who are gearing up for yet another delightful Christmas special, and creators Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have shared their preferred holiday-themed episodes from each other’s tenures.

Among them, both the present and past showrunners (with the latter being responsible for this year’s release titled Joy to the World) have created a total of 15 Christmas specials for the Doctor. However, they too have their favorites that they frequently revisit, as they mentioned in the double issue of TopMob released on December 10th, which can be purchased starting from that date.

He adds: “I love all your specials, but I think [2010 episode] A Christmas Carol is a majestic piece of work for that moment of Michael Gambon realising that he is seeing his future self.

That’s truly remarkable, full stop – not just for Doctor Who or fantasy, but for any story. It’s such a captivating masterpiece, and I find myself deeply drawn to it.

As a devoted film aficionado, I must confess that among all the episodes I’ve encountered, none has left a lasting impression quite like the very first one I witnessed – The Christmas Invasion from 2005.

Pondering about how Christmas would unfold for Doctor Who, a thought struck me as delightful. A tinge of apprehension crept in considering the extended wait for the Doctor’s arrival, yet I found myself captivated by the brilliance of it all.

At that point, you knew it had returned permanently. The regeneration process had succeeded, and we certainly weren’t sure of that outcome before.

“Remember when David Tennant was unknown?” Davies muses. “What a world.”

This year’s Christmas episode of Doctor Who promises an intriguing revelation: Moffat hints at unveiling “the resolution to the most enduring enigma, not just in the Doctor Who cosmos, but across the entire universe.” The Doctor will share an answer to a question you’ve pondered since your childhood.

“Unless you spend your life in Premier Inns,” Davies quips.

In a new rendition, Ncuti Gatwa is set to play The Doctor, with Nicola Coughlan portraying Joy. The series, titled “Joy to the World,” will revolve around a unique hotel that acquires time-travel capabilities, offering guests an opportunity to vacation throughout history.

In the newly revealed sneak peeks, we can see the Doctor gearing up for a fight against an age-old adversary.
