This week, we reached a significant moment in the history of Doctor Who – enthusiasts worldwide commemorated the 20th anniversary of the series’ revival on television during its contemporary reincarnation.
Indeed, although actors like David Tennant and Matt Smith have become renowned as memorable versions of the Doctor since then, it was Christopher Eccleston who kicked off the New Who era by portraying the Time Lord for only a single season in 2005.
Following his exit, whispers arose about tension between me and the BBC. In hindsight, I can confirm that my rapport with my direct supervisors, such as showrunner Russell T Davies, deteriorated beyond repair during the initial production phase.
As I reflect on the extraordinary journey of Doctor Who, I must acknowledge the remarkable talent that Christopher Eccleston brought to the role in 2005. In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary, Russell Davies, who resumed his duties as showrunner in 2023, showered praise on Eccleston for his unforgettable portrayal of the Ninth Doctor.
He stated that the individual is extraordinarily skilled,” he explained. “Not only do you have the opportunity to collaborate with a prodigy, but one who remains at the pinnacle of his abilities even after so many years. That’s the privilege we had.
Before Matthew Eccleston was cast as the Doctor, there were rumors in gossip magazines that magician Paul Daniels could take on the role. However, it was Eccleston who ultimately shifted the public’s view of the series.
Moreover, Davies shared an anecdote that underscored Eccleston’s determination to embrace the part he was offered.
One day, strolling onto the set in the morning, I recall Chris shared an interesting tidbit. He’d found out somewhere, whether a book or the web, that the Doctor had an allergy to aspirin. Interestingly enough, this was something William Hartnell’s portrayal of the Doctor had mentioned earlier.
This morning, we brainstormed on whether we could incorporate aspirin into our storyline. I had to remind Chris that ideas from the ’60s aren’t always set in stone – they don’t have to be strictly followed. This demonstrates his enthusiasm and dedication to the project.
He found it fitting to express: “I believe he’s aware of the lasting impression he’s made, being an extraordinary Doctor who shattered the typical mold.
As a devoted movie critic, I must admit that Christopher Eccleston’s return to the small screen as Doctor Who seems highly unlikely, at least according to his own words. In 2023, he expressed that a significant shake-up would be required, including the departures of Russell T Davies, Jane Tranter, Phil Collinson, and Julie Gardner, for him to reconsider his decision. However, since 2021, I’ve been thrilled to witness his return in various Big Finish audio dramas, which have undeniably added a new dimension to the Doctor Who universe.
