Doctor Who’s Russell T Davies says finale will ‘shake up’ lore of Gallifrey

Russell T Davies, the mastermind behind the Doctor Who series, hinted that the upcoming two-episode conclusion might alter our existing beliefs about the troubled planet Gallifrey.

In a thrilling climax, it’s been announced that Season 15 of both World and Reality War will conclude with a bang, as the shocking revelation unfolds from The Interstellar Song Festival: Mrs. Flood, portrayed by Anita Dobson, is none other than The Rani!

Last week, we introduced a new incarnation of our traditional antagonist, portrayed by Archie Panjabi from The Good Wife. In this upcoming episode, viewers will see these two characters collaborating, although there may be tension between them.

In a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine, Davies expressed that the series has taken on an unprecedented level of wildness, encompassing an epic and deeply personal climax.

Previewing what’s in store, he added: “It takes some unforeseen twists… There are major surprises, involving the Doctor as well as for the Doctor. Part of it challenges the history of Gallifrey. Some parts reshape the Doctor, the Rani, and their connection.

In the past, Davies didn’t shy away from significant alterations to the Doctor Who mythos; for instance, the 2005 period started with an unexpected twist revealing that Gallifrey and its Time Lord inhabitants were wiped out in a devastating conflict.

Later showrunner, Steven Moffat, later changed that storyline in his 50th-anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor,” demonstrating the flexibility of the series’ continuity.

As discussions swirl about what lies ahead for Doctor Who after season 15, showrunner Russell Davies refers to the upcoming finale as a significant milestone, marking a complete loop for the current phase of the series. He hints that he has been skillfully incorporating aspects from throughout Ncuti Gatwa’s tenure into the storyline.

The themes and moments from the premier episode of Season 14, titled “The Church on Ruby Road,” have been effectively resolved. This is satisfying for loyal fans who have followed along, yet engaging and fresh for those just starting to watch.

At the final showdown, several well-known characters from the Doctor Who series will reappear, including Belinda Chandra (played by Varada Sethu) and Ruby Sunday (portrayed by Millie Gibson). They will join the latest and most exceptional agents of UNIT in this climactic scene.

On Saturdays starting May 24th, you can catch the latest episodes of Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer in the UK at 8am. Later in the day, it will also air on BBC One. For those outside the UK, the series is available on Disney+.
