As a lifelong Doctor Who fan who has watched every episode since the revival, I must say that the 2024 Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” was one of my favorites due to the major role played by Stephanie de Whalley’s character Anita. I remember when this character barely had ten lines in the first draft and it was a delight to see her evolution into a major player throughout the episode. The friendship between Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor and Anita proved to be a standout moment, and it made me feel like I was part of the story, cheering for their bond as they grew closer.
I have always appreciated how Doctor Who has the ability to surprise its audience with unexpected characters and plot twists, and this expansion of Anita’s role is no exception. It was a joy to see her character develop over time, and I can’t wait to see what happens next for her.
One thing that particularly stands out in my mind about the special is the potential for a spin-off centered around the Time Hotel. If Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat follow through with this idea, it would be an exciting addition to the Doctor Who universe. I can only imagine the adventures that could take place within the walls of the Time Hotel, and I’m eagerly anticipating what they might come up with next.
To wrap things up, I have to add a little humor to lighten the mood: If the Doctor ever finds himself in need of a good cup of tea while visiting the Time Hotel, I hope he remembers to ask Anita for help – after all, she did spend a whole year getting to know him!
In a surprising twist for Doctor Who’s 2024 Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” the character Anita, played by Stephanie de Whalley, took center stage in an unexpected and significant way, leaving fans in awe.
In the hotel where Nicola Coughlan’s character Joy stayed, an employee named Anita unexpectedly spent a full year cultivating a relationship with the Doctor, who was trapped on Earth, hoping for a chance to access the Time Hotel.
In the episode, the friendship between Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor and Anita was a highlight for me, yet surprisingly, it wasn’t initially planned to unfold that way. In fact, at one point, the scene depicting their bond hadn’t been scripted at all.
The writer of this episode, who used to be the showrunner (Steven Moffat), shared this information during an interview featured in this month’s edition of Doctor Who Magazine.
“Originally that was very different, and Anita barely featured in it,” Moffat explained.
To clarify, the significant alteration made between the initial version and the final one centers on the actions of the Doctor throughout the year. Initially, I had envisioned him touring the entire globe.

In an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview for the episode, showrunner Russell T Davies mentioned that Anita’s character, portrayed by Steph, evolved significantly more than expected. Originally, she only had ten lines written for her in the initial script.
Then, we all grew quite fond of her, and Steven took a particular liking to her. As a result, he continued to write more for her. Now, she has evolved into a significant character within the story.
For now, it appears that the Doctor has abandoned Anita, but creators Davies and Moffat hint that a key aspect of the story might reappear – the Time Hotel itself.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Davies proposed the idea of Moffat penning a spin-off series based on that location. To this suggestion, Moffat responded: “That sounds like a full-fledged show to me! It’s like a modern take on Mr. Benn.
As a devoted cinephile, I simply can’t help but suggest a revival of the Time Hotel! The Doctor, I’m certain, would find it irresistible not to pay a visit!
