As a long-standing devotee of the TARDIS and its enigmatic occupant, I must say that the forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas special has me more than a little giddy with anticipation. The prospect of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor joining forces with Nicola Coughlan’s new character, Joy, is enough to make any Whovian’s heart race faster than a Time Lord in a time storm.
With November now behind us, it’s time to focus fully on the approaching holiday season, particularly Christmas, as well as the upcoming Doctor Who special that will soon be airing on television.
On Christmas Day, the thrilling new episode is scheduled to broadcast, bringing back Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and introducing a fresh character, played by Nicola Coughlan named Joy.
Fans have seen an early glimpse of a special episode scripted by Steven Moffat, who used to work on Doctor Who.
But now, Moffat has teased some further details about what’s to come in the new episode.
In conversation with BBC South East news, Moffat hinted: “Regarding the Christmas special, think about a distant future where a time-traveling hotel chain exists. Now ponder, what would be the first action such a hotel chain would take if they had time travel? They’d quickly recognize they could sell all the unsold nights in their hotels throughout history.
Discussing the origins of his participation in the Christmas special, Moffat revealed that showrunner Russell T Davies reached out to him, as he was finding it challenging to finish the Christmas storyline given his focus on a forthcoming second season.
Moffat clarified that he cherishes working on the Doctor Who Christmas specials since he’s deeply fond of the holiday season and genuinely enjoys celebrating Christmas.
Later on, an email arrived with the message, “Steven, it seems I’ve hit a roadblock with the second series; I won’t be able to finish this Christmas script. Could you step in and write a fresh one instead?” This means that Steven is being asked to write a new script for the second series, rather than completing Russell T Davies’ current script.
At the moment, we don’t have much additional information about Joy to the World, but rest assured, we’ll likely reveal more tidbits as the release date approaches.
As the character Joy, whom I refer to as a resolute woman, has been described by none other than Coughlan herself as one whose life undergoes an irreversible transformation upon meeting the Doctor, it’s clear that fellow enthusiasts and I alike are eagerly anticipating witnessing how she fits seamlessly into this captivating narrative.
Previously, Moffat described Coughlan’s acting in that episode as “deeply moving,” and considering some of Moffat’s prior Doctor Who episodes had a very somber tone, we’re preparing ourselves for quite an emotional ride.
In other instances, we’ve been given hints about the upcoming Christmas episode, with Davies mentioning in a backstage YouTube video for Empire of Death: “As the Doctor travels through time, you know what usually occurs for the Doctor periodically? Christmas! And here it is again.
I can’t reveal too many details, but the project has already started, and trust me, it’s quite extraordinary – perhaps the most bizarre Christmas special ever! It’s grandiose, taking you to various unexpected places. And it tells a powerful story about who the Doctor becomes when he’s on his own.
