As a seasoned Doctor Who enthusiast with over three decades of time-traveling tales under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for this year’s Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” is palpable. With Steven Moffat at the helm once more, we fans can expect a rollercoaster ride of emotions, humor, and perhaps a few tears shed along the way.
The countdown has begun.
Fear not, Doctor Who enthusiasts! Despite the ominous title “Joy to the World,” this year’s Christmas special should be less gloomy compared to Steven Moffat’s past works, as he assures us that it will have a more cheerful and lighthearted tone.
Previously mentioned, Steven Moffat will write the 2024 Christmas special of Doctor Who. For devoted fans, Moffat’s episodes don’t always bring the most cheerful outcomes.
Earlier this year, Moffat wrote the highly praised episode “Boom” for season 14, where Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor was trapped on a landmine throughout the show while Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, worked desperately to rescue him.
He mentioned to SFX magazine that it contains a touch of holiday charm, suggesting it leans towards the somewhat humorous side, to some extent.
Truthfully, it becomes quite heartfelt, and there’s a playful aspect as well, since in relation to the larger narrative, the Doctor has recently lost a friend.
In the final episode of season 14, viewers saw Ruby Sunday bid farewell to the Doctor and the TARDIS as she reconnected with her long-absent mother. For now, it seems the Doctor will embark on a solo journey during the upcoming holiday season. However, this solitude doesn’t last long, as he encounters Joy, skillfully portrayed by Nicola Coughlan.
Moffat explained further: “This places the Doctor in a specific location, and in our contemporary series, we’ve consistently respected this. Thus, it’s the Doctor on his own – but don’t let that sound gloomy, it certainly isn’t.
“It’s charming, heartfelt, and full of emotion. It’s not like Blink; that’s their standard review for all my episodes – it’s not like Blink.
Although specifics about the storyline of Joy to the World remain unclear, a sneak peek has hinted at the reemergence of the Silurians. In this preview, we find Joy facing off with one of these creatures in her hotel room.
It’s unclear precisely what activities the Doctor and Joy might engage in, but Moffat did share some intriguing plot details during an interview with BBC South News in November.
“Imagine in the far, far future that a hotel chain got hold of the idea of time travel,” he began.
“If a hotel chain possessed time-travel capabilities, they’d recognize that they had a chance to market and sell all the unreserved nights from their hotels throughout history.
Joy to the World will be on screens on Christmas Day, so there isn’t long to go now!
