As a die-hard fan of Outer Banks who has invested countless hours into this thrilling series, I must say that the ending of season 4 part 2 left me utterly speechless and heartbroken. The death of JJ (Rudy Pankow) was a shocking twist that will undoubtedly set the Pogues on a quest for revenge in the upcoming season 5.
*Warning: Spoilers for Outer Banks season 4 ahead*
The second half of Outer Banks season 4 has arrived on Netflix, leaving viewers stunned by an unexpectedly heart-wrenching finale, which undoubtedly will propel the Pogues to seek vengeance in season 5.
In a fresh series, we find the Pogues embarking on their quest to locate Blackbeard’s Blue Crown. Their aim is to sell this treasure and secure their home, Poguelandia.
However, just as they progressed, several formidable adversaries emerged before them – the ruthless Corsair pirates and the malevolent father of JJ, Chandler Groff, portrayed by Tony Crane. Both groups coveted the treasure for their own purposes.
Ultimately, the treasure hunt leads to a fierce confrontation amidst a whirling sandstorm in Morocco, where JJ (Rudy Pankow) seems to suffer a tragic fate at the hands of Groff, who was unveiled as his biological father in season 4’s first half.
However, there seems to be a question about whether John B (JJ) from Outer Banks truly meets his demise and if actor Rudy Pankow is parting ways with the series. Here’s what the cast and crew have shared regarding the surprising finale of season 4.
Does JJ actually die in Outer Banks season 4?
In the thrilling conclusion of season 4, JJ’s journey peaked as he scaled a towering Moroccan statue during a ferocious sandstorm, ultimately uncovering Blackbeard’s Blue Crown.
However, misfortune ensued when Groff emerged and threatened Kiara (Madison Bailey), forcing JJ to surrender the crown in order to safeguard her life.
JJ informed Groff that he already possesses all he’s ever desired, then relinquished the crown,” said JJ, adding, “items you’ll never obtain.
In a surprising twist, Groff, having feigned an apology, went on to intentionally and brutally wound JJ. As a result, JJ bled out and ultimately passed away while being held by Kiara.
Is Rudy Pankow leaving Outer Banks?
Indeed, Pankow will no longer be a part of the Outer Banks series permanently, as his character met their end in the final episode of season 4.
Expressing sincere farewells, Pankow conveyed gratitude to Netflix, “I’d like to extend my deepest thanks to everyone involved – both cast and crew. It has been an absolute joy to be part of this team.
This venture, without a doubt, is the largest project I’ve taken on in my career thus far, and what an incredible beginning it has been! It’s a kickoff that will last a lifetime. I’m already going to miss it tremendously. Thank you for providing memories that I’ll cherish forever.
He continued: “To all the fans that show so much support and love for JJ, I just want to say thank you. It really did make an impact on me, playing him. It’s been an honour to bring him to life for you guys, and it’s been a joy to play him. And P4L!”
What have the Outer Banks cast and crew said about JJ’s death?
Fans may have found the conclusion startling, but the cast and team behind the scenes were prepared since they’ve confirmed that JJ’s demise had been planned all along.
According to Shannon Burke, co-creator, it was clear at the conclusion of season three that season four would revolve around JJ (as shared with The Hollywood Reporter).
As a passionate film buff, I must admit that while there were some surprises along the way, I had a good grasp of the main plot twists. I also had an inkling of where JJ’s story would eventually lead, though the exact timing was uncertain to me. In essence, I was well-informed about the general direction his character arc would take.
Jonas Pate, one of the co-creators, mentioned: “It’s been like an undercurrent in his character since the start. He’s truly a character with tragic aspects, and the concept of our mortality, and the realization that time is limited – these are elements that the series explores as well.
He continued: “It’s something John B has talked about from the first season. So believe it or not, this is something that was always sort of baked in the cake, and we just wanted to tell the story as elegantly and interestingly as possible.”
The development didn’t come as a surprise to JJ actor Pankow either.
In an Inside Look video feature discussing the season 4 finale, he expressed his understanding of JJ’s decision not to participate when he learned about it, as the character description for the audition stated that JJ was extremely loyal. This can be seen in the video feature below.
As the situation became increasingly critical, it seemed like his approach was to prioritize his friends over himself, shouldering any potential risks.
Chase Stokes, our leading man portraying John B, remarked: “John B’s bond with JJ truly encapsulates the essence of friendship. I remain deeply appreciative for the journey I’ve shared with Rudy.
Madison Bailey, the actress portraying Kiara, remarked: “Being a Pogue means creating one’s unique interpretations of contentment, delight, and fellowship.
As a die-hard movie fan, I’d say his portrayal resonates deeply with me – it’s all about standing firm in the face of adversity, defying societal norms, and fighting for what truly matters.
As a movie enthusiast, I can say that he’s always weighing the value of each moment in his life, and from where I stand, it seems like he’s making the most of every second, absolutely!
Life holds immense value and vulnerability, and his passing raises significant questions about what truly matters and how one copes with loss, particularly when it’s someone so near. What does the future hold for OBX, and how can we move forward when someone dear departs?
