Does Okami 2 End Platinum’s Next Project?

As a long-time gaming enthusiast who has been following Hideki Kamiya’s work since my early days of playing Devil May Cry, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about the future of Project G.G. The man behind some of my favorite games, such as Bayonetta and Okami, has once again captured my imagination with this tantalizing teaser that leaves me eagerly awaiting more information about the project’s progress.

However, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern upon learning that Kamiya has left PlatinumGames and is no longer attached to Project G.G.. While it’s great to see him taking on new challenges with Clovers, the uncertainty surrounding the game’s future leaves me feeling anxious about its fate.

But hey, who knows? Maybe Kamiya will find a way to make another stunning comeback like he did with Okami 2. In the meantime, I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that PlatinumGames will eventually reveal more about this mysterious project. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll get another epic adventure set in a city plunged into chaos by a giant shadow. Only time will tell!

Oh, and let’s not forget the joke: I guess if you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen – or in this case, the gaming industry. Kamiya certainly knows how to keep us on our toes!

At The Game Awards 2024, we got a playful sneak peek at the highly awaited comeback of Amaterasu in Okami 2. This sparked excitement among fans, as Hideki Kamiya is once again taking the helm for the Capcom sequel, this time with his new studios Clovers, M-TWO, and Machine Head Works. Kamiya, a mastermind behind several timeless Capcom and PlatinumGames titles like Bayonetta, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and The Wonderful 101, is back at the helm. With the revival of an 18-year-old classic in focus, many PlatinumGames enthusiasts are curious about another of Kamiya’s announced projects, dubbed “Project G.G.”

As a gamer, I’m eagerly anticipating “Project G.G.”, the latest creation from PlatinumGames. Though its official title remains undecided, a tantalizing teaser trailer dropped in February 2020, offering a glimpse of a city engulfed in chaos by a towering shadow. However, hope flickers as an enigmatic figure emerges. This game is a brainchild of director Hideki Kamiya, marking another original masterpiece from his creative mind. In a recent statement about the project launch, Kamiya shared, “For fourteen years since we established this studio, our ambition has been to develop and release a game born from Platinum intellectual property. At last, we’re standing at the starting line.

Hey there! Speaking as a gaming enthusiast myself, I’ve always been eagerly awaiting new projects from PlatinumGames, especially those directed by Hideki Kamiya. After all, his work has given us masterpieces like Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta. When he announced Project G.G., it was exciting to see him working on another original title, given that Scalebound, his previously announced action RPG, was unfortunately cancelled in 2017.

For three years, Kamiya and PlatinumGames kept the development of Project G.G. under wraps, which only fueled speculation among fans. Many began to whisper that this might be another installment in the Viewtiful Joe series, as it was rumored to mark the end of Kamiya’s superhero trilogy. Yet, there were no official confirmations during this time.

Project G.G. Development Is Still Up in the Air

Regrettably, the superhero, Kamiya, didn’t manage a smooth exit when he parted ways with his Vice President position at PlatinumGames in October 2023. In response to questions about his departure and the fate of Project G.G., Kamiya responded cryptically on X (formerly Twitter) by saying “Ask Platinum about Platinum.” In an effort to get more details, VideoGamesChronicle received a reply from a representative at PlatinumGames who said they couldn’t provide any additional information regarding Kamiya’s departure beyond what was already announced on X (Twitter).

Currently, Kamiya is heading Clovers, implying he’s no longer involved with the development of Project G.G. Yet, it’s important to note that PlatinumGames retains ownership of the property, leaving open the potential for its reappearance in the gaming world. Since then, there haven’t been any updates about Project G.G., but Capcom is working on Okami 2 during the pre-production phase.
