Dolph Ziggler Reflects on Defeating The Authority at WWE Survivor Series 2014, Sting's WWE Debut

As a longtime fan of professional wrestling and someone who witnessed Dolph Ziggler’s iconic performance at WWE Survivor Series 2014, I can’t help but feel awe-inspired when reflecting on that unforgettable night. Ten years have passed since that pivotal moment in the annals of wrestling history, and I still find myself revisiting that match whenever I need a reminder of what makes this art form so captivating.

Dolph Ziggler had defeated The Authority a decade prior at Survivor Series 2014. In this event, the WWE organized an intense headliner pitting Team WWE against Team Authority with control of the company hanging in the balance. Led by John Cena, Team WWE aimed to topple The Authority’s oppressive regime of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. In contrast, Seth Rollins captained Team Authority, determined to eliminate those who opposed them. The stakes were high: if Team WWE (Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, Erick Rowan, and Ryback) triumphed, The Authority would be stripped of their corporate roles. However, if Team Authority (Rollins, Mark Henry, Luke Harper, Kane, and Rusev) won, all members of Team WWE except Cena would face dismissal.)

Toward the end of the contest, Big Show betrayally attacked Cena with a powerful punch, knocking him out and resulting in Cena’s elimination. Left alone against Rollins, Kane, and Harper from Team Authority, Ziggler bravely fought on, managing to take down each opponent one by one until only Rollins remained. As Triple H attempted to interfere, a surprise entrance by Sting saw him join forces with Team WWE, enabling Ziggler to pin Rollins and secure the victory for his team, bringing the show to a thrilling close.

It was a night that further immortalized The Wanted Man’s career.

In an interview with ComicBook before the TNA Slammiversary event, Nic Nemeth (previously known as Dolph Ziggler) looked back on his memorable showcase at WWE Survivor Series 2014 and appreciated the well-crafted narrative behind it.

Nemeth expressed his admiration for the captivating storyline, “Each part was exceptional. A replacement might not achieve the same level of beauty and tension. Every turn brought consequences for the villains, making them pay in unexpected ways. Approximately an hour-long, this masterpiece was filled with numerous engaging moments.”

As someone who has faced my fair share of underdog situations throughout my life, I can’t help but be deeply moved by stories that resonate with this theme. The idea of being outnumbered and yet emerging victorious is a powerful one. But what makes these stories truly memorable isn’t just the outcome of the match or competition. It’s the emotion behind it.

During the wrestling marathon, the most taxing moment arrived when Ziggler lay motionless in the ring. With both him and Seth Rollins unconscious on the mat, Sting made his long-awaited WWE entrance, marking his debut on a WWE broadcast after decades in the industry. As The Icon approached the ring and clashed with Triple H, Ziggler and Rollins remained unresponsive.

Seth and I were accustomed to engaging in frequent wrestling matches with each other, yet we didn’t spend much time socializing. One day, we found ourselves having to lie next to one another for ten minutes without moving. As I lay there, I suddenly thought, “I bet Sting is going to show up.” Being fans first, we simply relaxed and enjoyed the moment, exclaiming, “Wow, that’s awesome!”

Since parting ways with WWE, Ziggler, now known as Nic Nemeth or “The Wanted Man,” is most prominently seen in TNA. He has been pursuing TNA World Champion Moose and the evil faction The System since making his debut at TNA’s Hard to Kill event in January.

Nemeth challenges for the TNA World Championship at TNA Slammiversary on Saturday, July 20th.
