Donald Glover Talks Anime Influence on Childish Gambino Tour

Donald Glover is now a dominant force in the entertainment industry. Not only does he produce the critically acclaimed FX series, “Atlanta“, but he has also acted in films like “Star Wars, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Community“, and numerous others. As of now, Glover is busy touring as his musical persona, Childish Gambino, which he’s announced will be his final act. The shows are visually stunning, with lighting effects that Glover claims were inspired by a surprising element from his past. Apart from captivating concertgoers, these light displays are meant to resemble the visual spectacles commonly seen in anime

Apart from incorporating anime elements in his Childish Gambino series, Donald Glover, also recently developed an anime short titled “Yoppaman: Happy Grits Training Video“, in collaboration with creator Zack Fox. In Fox’s own words about the project, “During 2022, I began creating an animated concept alongside my long-time collaborator Chibu Okere. We are both Atlanta natives who were raised on shows like Devilman, FLCL, Evangelion, Cartoon Network from the ’90s, and naturally, southern black folklore, music, comedy, fashion, and more. As such, we aimed to produce something that blended all these elements together, similar to a rich, flavorful gumbo.”

Childish Gambino’s Anime Influence

Speaking as an ardent fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the latest addition to our performances – the captivating spectacle we call “Light-Binder”. In a recent Instagram post, I acknowledged the influence of anime in shaping this mesmerizing light show. Every performance, I find myself both proud and spellbound by it. This particular creation was our interpretation of the promises made by concerts in the anime I grew up watching. As technology continues to advance, I believe this will become a mainstay of our live shows. For those of you who are interested in the technology behind it, don’t hesitate to reach out – I’d be more than happy to share! See you on tour!

Although the anime short “Yappaman” hasn’t been commissioned for a series yet, Zack Fox shared an intriguing concept: Imagine if the staff at a rundown 24-hour diner (similar to Waffle House) were so adept at fighting that they were drafted to safeguard Earth, all dressed in gleaming bodysuits reminiscent of “The Power Rangers”. Recognizing the idea as both unique and absurdly brilliant, we’ve kept it under wraps, gradually expanding the universe on our own instead of rushing to pitch it to a network
