The game “Donkey Kong Country Returns HD” came out on the Nintendo Switch last month, and for those who are undecided about the remastered version, a fresh demo has recently been launched. Although it may appear strange that Nintendo would release a demo following the game’s availability, it isn’t unprecedented; they have done this with titles like “Metroid Dread” in the past. Given the longevity of many Nintendo first-party games, even releasing a demo after the fact makes sense since it can still attract new fans.
As a fan excited about trying out the demo for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, I was disappointed to find that I couldn’t transfer my progress to the full game if I decide to purchase it later on. This means that if you enjoy the demo and choose to buy the game, you’ll have to replay certain levels from the beginning. While this can be a bit annoying, it might actually help you spot any hidden collectibles when you revisit those levels! You can download the demo right here for your gaming pleasure.
For Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, you might find that Donkey Kong Country Returns HD bears a striking resemblance to the initial three Donkey Kong Country games on Super Nintendo. This is a 2D platformer where players must navigate by jumping onto enemies, moving across platforms, and defeating colossal bosses. Although there are some changes from the SNES era such as new enemy types and the absence of water stages, enthusiasts of those earlier games should discover plenty to appreciate.
Originally launched for the Wii in 2010, “Donkey Kong Country Returns” was developed by Retro Studios, who are known for creating the Metroid Prime series. Since Retro Studios is currently working on “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond”, Nintendo entrusted Forever Entertainment SA to oversee the remastered version for Nintendo Switch. It’s worth noting that Nintendo has been frequently collaborating with external studios like Tantalus Media, who were responsible for the remaster of “Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD” last year, for many of its Switch remasters.
Forever Entertainment SA did an impressive job on the remastered version of ‘Donkey Kong Country Returns HD’. In my evaluation last month, I gave the game a score of 4 out of 5, stating that “it was fantastic back in 2010 and it’s still delightful to play today”. Although some Donkey Kong enthusiasts hoped for a new installment in the series, Nintendo appears to be re-releasing some classic games to bridge the gap. Here’s hoping for an exciting and significant addition to the Nintendo Switch 2 lineup in the future!
