Donnie Yen to Direct John Wick Spinoff Featuring Fan-Favorite Character Caine!

The upcoming spinoff film in the John Wick series from Lionsgate is taking shape as a unique project under the direction of renowned action star Donnie Yen, who will not only reprise his role as Caine but also serve as the director. The production is set to commence later this year, as per reports by Deadline, with Mattson Tomlin penning the script for this film. Interestingly, the movie will be an English-language film, but Lionsgate is marketing it as a martial arts movie in the style of Hong Kong, aligning well with Caine’s character portrayal so far.

The standalone film featuring the character Caine, from the John Wick series, hasn’t been titled or summarized as a plotline yet, but it’s expected to continue his story directly from John Wick: Chapter 4. In that movie, we meet Caine as a former assassin and an old comrade of John Wick. Despite being blind, he remains one of the deadliest killers in this world, and is forced into confronting John Wick due to threats against his daughter.

A Hong Kong action movie can be a strong selling point, but associating it with Donnie Yen’s distinctive style takes it to another level. At 61 years old, Donnie Yen is a trailblazer in the Hong Kong film industry and a key figure in connecting it with Hollywood for his generation. He gained international fame as the lead character in the Ip Man series, and has also made appearances in films like Rogue One, the live-action Mulan, and XXX: Return of Xander Cage in the U.S.

On Tuesday, Yen expressed his gratitude for the chance given by Lionsgate to raise the bar even higher for the “John Wick” film series. He stated that these movies have set an incredibly high standard in action movie production, and he’s excited and motivated to contribute to this endeavor.

Previously, I contributed as an uncredited co-writer on The Batman, and now, I’m teaming up with Matt Reeves again for the sequel. Additionally, I’m working on adapting Keanu Reeves’ comic book BRZRKR, and Aegon’s Conquest – the Game of Thrones spinoff. It’s an exciting time to be a part of these incredible stories!

The plot for Keanu Reeves’ upcoming movie, Caine, remains shrouded in mystery, given that John Wick: Chapter 5 is progressing with Reeves reprising his leading role. Moreover, the John Wick franchise is branching out with an animated prequel and Ballerina set to debut this summer on June 6th.
