In a more conversational style: Everyone remembers the famous quote from Will Ferrell’s movie “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” – “If you’re not first, you’re last.” This competitive mindset isn’t just fictional; it exists in the world of professional racing. I got to experience this firsthand while talking to one of the sport’s top competitors.
After the airing of Season 2 of “Full Speed” on the 2025 TV lineup, I recently had an opportunity to interview three-time and reigning NASCAR Cup Champion Joey Logano. In this conversation, he discussed a variety of topics ranging from his thoughts on the 2025 Netflix series to his preferred drivers, as well as the unique competitive spirit that has earned him a reputation as one of the most influential and contentious figures in motorsport history.
When I inquired about the source of his fierce competitive spirit from Logano, who at present is ninth in the NASCAR Cup standings, he responded in a manner that could have been fitting for Talladega Nights 2:
“He explained the origin of his intense competition as if it were a scene from an imagined sequel to Talladega Nights.
In my heart, I’m driven to outshine everyone else, much like a burning desire to triumph. Nothing else matters in this pursuit, it’s a singular focus. When I find myself in competitive environments, that drive simply bubbles to the surface – it’s an instinct I can’t suppress. And while some might view it as aggressive, I believe it’s healthy ambition. After all, they don’t hand out trophies for second place, do they? Competition is about striving for victory, isn’t it?
In a question posed to driver Logano during Full Speed Season 2, I asked about a moment where he referred to needing to maintain pressure on his rivals, using an analogy of keeping one’s foot on their necks in reference to his competition. Specifically, I was curious to learn how he manages the balance between his fiercely competitive driving style and the relaxed persona he presents off the track, as depicted throughout the series.
What it comes down to is perspective, as Logano put it:
Occasionally, it helps to remind yourself that even on tough days at the track, it’s still not so terrible when you consider the fact that you’re racing cars for a living – pretty awesome, right? Even though winning and competition are important, it can be beneficial to pause and reflect on the fact that I have an exceptional family, a rewarding job, and a wonderful partner. In the grand scheme of things, what more could one truly desire?
People who manage to turn their dreams into a reality through sheer luck and determination often find success both professionally and personally. This outlook is what connects individuals such as Joey Logano with the rest of us.
Ultimately, what truly counts is enjoying a fulfilling career, a loving family, and a rewarding life. Until it’s time to step on the gas and move forward, so to speak.
You can stream both seasons of “Full Speed” using a Netflix membership. If you’re interested in watching Logano compete and hear his insights on racing, the Coca-Cola 600 (the annual grand event) will be available for streaming on Sunday, May 25th, for those with an Amazon Prime subscription.
