The DC Universe streaming show “Swamp Thing” had just one season, which was disappointingly short given its quality. Based on the Swamp Thing character from DC Comics, this series premiered on May 31, 2019, on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming platform. It traced Dr. Alec Holland’s (Andy Bean) transformation into the hybrid creature known as Swamp Thing and explored his relationship with ally Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed). Upon release, the series was widely acclaimed for blending horror elements effectively within a superhero TV show.
Unfortunately, it was revealed that Swamp Thing had been cancelled shortly following the debut of its first episode on DC Universe. Despite plans for Swamp Thing to reappear in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU, and with James Mangold set to direct his new cinematic adventure, the fact that Swamp Thing only lasted one season and was swiftly cancelled remains a significant disappointment in the world of superhero television, given how exceptional the series truly was.
Swamp Thing’s Streaming Series Is His Best Adaptation to Date
Swamp Thing, a character deeply rooted in DC Comics lore, has had a mixed history when it comes to screen adaptations. The films from the 1980s, directed by Wes Craven and Jim Wynorski, were low-budget productions that didn’t significantly boost Swamp Thing’s popularity. On the other hand, the 1991 animated series and its accompanying toys effectively portrayed the character, despite only airing for five episodes. The live-action series from 1990 to 1993, spanning over 70 episodes, had significant improvements in the suit and makeup for Dick Durock’s Swamp Thing, who also played the titular role in the ’80s films. However, it’s the latest adaptation on DC Universe that comes closest to capturing Swamp Thing authentically and engagingly.
Similar to the comics that served as its foundation, Swamp Thing introduced a chilling horror film atmosphere to its narrative about a heroic swamp creature rarely found in contemporary superhero films and television series. This eerie tone set it apart from the vibrancy and glitz of the Arrowverse and the urban crime drama of Titans, allowing it to carve out a unique identity among live-action DC TV shows. One of the factors that made Swamp Thing truly exceptional was its cinematic quality, which gave it a big-screen feel.
Swamp Thing Had Big-Screen Worthy Production Values
Previously, small-screen live-action superhero stories often lacked the budget to rival the grandeur and spectacle of big-screen superhero movies. However, the DC Universe’s Swamp Thing managed to disregard such financial limitations completely, offering a cinematic superhero experience that just so happened to be spread across 10 episodes. Boasting renowned actors like Virginia Madsen, Will Patton, and Kevin Durand, Swamp Thing boasted a level of quality that rivaled its eerie swamp backdrop, which felt authentically drawn from Southern Gothic horror cinema and never appeared anything less than genuine.
In the show, the character design of the main character, who is essentially a plant-based humanoid, was impressive. Swamp Thing, as portrayed in the DC Universe series, was remarkably faithful to its comic book origins, with Derek Mears donning an exceptional suit and makeup. What made the series stand out even more was the decision to bring Swamp Thing to life using practical effects rather than CGI or motion capture, which would have been the usual choice for a big-screen Swamp Thing.
Swamp Thing Captured the Pathos & the Power of Its Title Character
In a common perception, Batman is often seen as the DC superhero who has experienced the most tragedy. However, Swamp Thing’s story is deeply rooted in tragedy and sadness from its very core. The ‘Swamp Thing’ series deliberately highlighted Alec Holland’s narrative as a tragic tale of a man turned into a monster due to unfortunate scientific experiments. The acting prowess of Andy Bean portraying Alec, and Derek Mears embodying Swamp Thing, beautifully encapsulated the sadness of Alec Holland’s journey, his discovery of heroism with his new abilities, and the cinematic feel of a monster movie that is inherent in his setting and transformation.
The character Swamp Thing meticulously explored the personality of Dr. Alec Holland, a scientist whose questionable research practices tarnished his standing within the scientific community. Moreover, Swamp Thing delved into the personal lives of its diverse cast members, with many characters experiencing emotions such as grief and resentment, similar to Alec’s own struggles. This is particularly evident in Maria Sunderland (Virginia Madsen) who grapples with her troubled marriage to Avery (Will Patton), and her growing fixation on resurrecting her deceased daughter Shawna. In many ways, Swamp Thing could be considered a drama series that excels in both character development and visual effects, comparable perhaps only to the human dramas presented in Superman & Lois when it later emerged on screen.
As a movie critic, I find myself deeply saddened by the untimely cancellation of “Swamp Thing,” a series that truly captured the essence of its titular character. Just as it was gaining momentum and taking flight, it was abruptly cut short, leaving fans like me yearning for more. The fact that this show was such an exceptional homage to Swamp Thing only magnifies the regret I feel about its premature end.
In a single season, “Swamp Thing” managed to breathe new life into a character that had never been portrayed quite so faithfully in any previous live-action or animated adaptation. Its brief multiversal appearance in the CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” only served to underscore its potential and leave us wanting more.
It is my firm belief that “Swamp Thing” deserved a far longer run, one that would have allowed it to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of stories and themes surrounding its unique hero. Alas, fate had other plans, and we are left with only fond memories of what could have been.
