DOOM: The Dark Ages Attracts 3 Million Players, Over 2 Million Estimated on Xbox

Update [Wed 21st May 2025, 8am]:

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share an exciting piece of news: Journalist Chris Dring has recently shared on Twitter that according to the analysis by Ampere, a staggering 2 million players have already jumped into DOOM: The Dark Ages on Xbox! It’s amazing to see such a massive community gathering around this game.

It’s not certain whether the reference encompasses both Xbox Series X|S gaming systems and Microsoft’s PC marketplace, but given that assumption, it’s reasonable to infer that many of these gamers likely subscribe to Xbox Game Pass.

It’s unlikely we’ll ever get detailed figures about the sales for this release, but it’s still intriguing data worth noting.

In the weeks following its debut, DOOM: The Dark Ages has been enjoyed by over three million gamers, marking the largest launch in the history of id Software’s development career.

Bethesda announced through a tweet that the new release surpassed a significant milestone seven times quicker than its predecessor, DOOM Eternal. The game is available at full price for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, and it’s also part of Game Pass on launch day.

Speaking as a passionate gamer, when it comes to comparing DOOM Eternal with its predecessor, I’ve got to mention an interesting fact: unlike DOOM Eternal, the middle title in the trilogy wasn’t available on Game Pass at launch, but it did join the service approximately six months after its initial release.

Contrary to fan worries that had been growing over the weekend, where enthusiasts closely monitored the game’s active player numbers on Steam and they never surpassed 32,000 users – a figure significantly lower than comparable recent releases like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered – it seemed that the FPS wasn’t performing well. However, with Bethesda’s latest update, it seems that initial assessment was inaccurate.

In our review of DOOM: The Dark Ages for PS5, we gave it an 8 out of 10 and stated that after taking some time to get accustomed to the game, you’ll find another amazingly fierce first-person shooter. Additionally, our guide for DOOM: The Dark Ages offers a comprehensive look at every collectible in the game.
