DOOM: The Dark Ages Director Wants to Give Players “New Tools to Master”

The Dark Ages is packed with exciting features such as larger maps and an extensive campaign that’s described as the most expansive yet. Additionally, the Slayer will be bulkier and more robust in this version. As for the weapons, they are all newly designed, with the game director, Hugo Martin, expressing great enthusiasm about almost every single one of them.

Martin and producer Marty Stratton recently spoke to PC Gamer for their 408th issue, with Martin pointing out, “It seems only the shotguns remain unchanged. The Plasma weapon is completely different, so everything else is brand new. This was intentionally done to ensure we were providing you with fresh tools to learn and master.

The latest Plasma Gun is referred to as the Accelerator, essentially functioning like a short-range plasma submachine gun. It boasts a high rate of fire and is quite enjoyable to use. In addition, you may have noticed the Skullcrusher flak in trailers, while the Railspike’s projectiles are potent enough to immobilize enemies against walls.

Martin mentioned that it’s essential to include classic elements in a game like Doom, such as the plasma rifle and shotguns. However, he wanted to explore what else could be created. So, they began designing each weapon from the ground up. Additionally, there are also innovative melee weapons introduced, like the Shield Saw and Flail.

As a gamer, I’m looking forward to wielding weapons like the Chaingun and Rocket Launcher again, although the specific changes haven’t been revealed yet. However, you won’t find the Heavy Cannon from DOOM Eternal in our arsenal at the beginning of Dark Ages. To reintroduce it would feel more like additional content because most players have already become proficient with this weapon.

The aim is to equip players with an entirely fresh set of tools for exploration, learning, and proficiency. This will create a truly well-balanced gaming experience, ensuring that we won’t need to increase the challenge level right away because the new tools are not something you have already mastered in the previous game.

On May 15th, DOOM: The Dark Ages debuts on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC platforms. This game will be accessible from day one through Game Pass. For additional information, don’t forget to read our interview with the development team, and stay tuned for future updates.
