DOOM: The Dark Ages Launches on May 15

At the Xbox Developer_Direct event, it was no shock that DOOM: The Dark Ages took center stage. Developer id Software provided a detailed sneak peek into their upcoming first-person shooter, and it seems this new installment promises another thrilling chapter for the franchise.

In contrast to previous versions, DOOM: The Dark Ages stands out as a game that offers a semi-open environment. As described by director Hugo Martin, it boasts the largest play area ever seen in a DOOM game. Players will embark on an adventure to uncover hidden caves and mines, seeking essential resources along the way.

Martin explains that you have the power to dictate the tempo of the game, deciding where to venture, whom to battle, and which goals to chase after. Essentially, he’s describing it as a “DOOM” playground brimming with warfare and wealth, he says. And as id Software puts it, this is their largest campaign ever constructed, boasting a significant margin, and filled with additional content to keep you engaged. Learn more about that through here.

In the game titled “DOOM: The Dark Ages”, there’s a fresh approach to combat being introduced, moving away from the “jump and shoot” style seen in Eternal. Instead, it encourages players to hold their ground and engage enemies with vigor, fitting the medieval ambiance of this prequel. Innovative equipment includes a Shield Saw, an iron flail, a spiked mace, an electric gauntlet, and a collection of weapons described by id as “some of the most absurdly powerful” they’ve ever created in-house.

The glory kills have been revamped and are now entirely unsynchronized. Players can anticipate experiencing fully developed gameplay segments focusing on piloting an Altan mech or a cybernetic dragon that breathes fire and fires gatling guns. Additionally, new difficulty settings have been incorporated, featuring multiple new sliders, with the developers describing the game as “the ideal starting point” for beginners.

In a fresh take on storytelling, DOOM: The Dark Ages is promised to deliver a “grand, summer blockbuster” tale by id Software. Rather than being hidden within the game’s codex, the narrative has been moved into cutscenes, introducing new characters, familiar allies, and formidable new adversaries.

Finishing Move is currently creating the music for this project. This music production team has previously worked on games like “The Callisto Protocol”, “Borderlands 3”, and “Halo Wars 2”. However, Mick Gordon, who created the soundtracks for “DOOM (2016)” and “DOOM Eternal”, won’t be part of it this time.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to debut on May 15th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, personal computers, and Game Pass, as rumors had hinted.
