DOOM: The Dark Ages’ Levels are id Software’s “Largest Spaces” Ever, But Still “Nice and Contained”

As a passionate gamer, I’m pumped about DOOM: The Dark Ages. In an exclusive chat with Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar), the game’s director, Hugo Martin, has spilled some exciting beans. He confirmed that this installment will boast levels significantly larger than anything we’ve encountered in DOOM history. However, fear not about getting lost in its expansive corridors! Despite their size, you won’t be spending hours solely on exploration; instead, expect an engaging and action-packed experience throughout.

Martin discussed how the player’s moveset in “DOOM: The Dark Ages” requires ample space to employ strategies such as circle-strafing to dodge demon attacks. Consequently, he referred to the levels in the forthcoming shooter game as “the most expansive areas we’ve ever crafted.

Martin discussed the design approach behind this concept, considering that gamers would appreciate a game like “DOOM: The Dark Ages” that offers swift-moving action with minimal pauses. Given the expansive levels, Martin has hinted that dedicated players will have ample opportunities to delve deeper into exploration.

Martin mentioned, “I’m not sure if you’d enjoy playing just one Doom level for two hours straight,” he said, as he believes they should offer enjoyable, compact experiences. Typically, an hour is ideal, but if you’re aiming to complete every detail, you might stretch it out longer.

Martin elaborated on the diverse nature of the game DOOM: The Dark Ages, explaining that the levels will be divided into different motifs. He offers an illustrative example where gamers initially find themselves in a dungeon, subsequently transitioning into a more expansive and free-flowing area.

Martin explained, “Initially, you’ll find yourself in a confined area resembling a dungeon, but as you progress through the level, it will transition into a larger, more open section.” He added, “Our aim is to ensure that the player experiences a good mix of environments.

Martin, together with executive producer Marty Stratton, has previously described DOOM: The Dark Ages as the most daring project undertaken by developer id Software thus far. They’ve also mentioned that the game is expected to be quite extensive, and it will offer additional, optional content for players.

Martin mentioned that the additional content in the game will primarily revolve around discovering hidden things. For those who enjoy finding every secret and are completists, they’ll significantly expand their gaming experience.

In the same Q&A session, Martin emphasized the importance of striking the right balance in the duration of a game level. Specifically, he suggested that a player should ideally complete a level within approximately one hour.

He expressed that we should aim to keep things concise, ensuring each part doesn’t outlast its relevance. In his opinion, the ideal length seems to be around an hour. Therefore, our current focus is on fine-tuning and maintaining this balance without overstepping the mark. However, it’s worth noting that this project is indeed extensive.

In contrast to its predecessor, DOOM: The Dark Ages is planning to stick with a single-player, first-person shooter campaign. Previously, Stratton has clarified that this game will not include multiplayer modes. From the onset of development, the team decided to omit multiplayer, channeling their efforts into enhancing other aspects such as mini-games and the mech experience instead.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and is coming out on May 15.
