Id Software recently unveiled the release date for “DOOM: The Dark Ages,” also presenting an extensive look at the upcoming first-person shooter. Earlier this summer, Xbox and Bethesda announced “DOOM: The Dark Ages” with a wide release window of 2025 for the game. Instead of following the events after “DOOM” (2016) and “DOOM Eternal,” “The Dark Ages” serves as a prequel, focusing on the origins of the Doom Slayer. Previously unseen details about what will make this prequel unique have now been revealed by id Software.
At Xbox’s Developer Direct gathering, they revealed that the upcoming game titled DOOM: The Dark Ages is scheduled for release on May 15, 2025. Interestingly, while Bethesda and Xbox are the publishers of this game, it will also be available on PS5 alongside the Xbox Series X/S and PC versions. Notably, as a first-party title from Xbox, it’s set to debut on Xbox Game Pass simultaneously when it launches in May.

In contrast to its predecessors like DOOM Eternal, DOOM: The Dark Ages aims to make the Doom Slayer feel more robust, or tank-like, instead of agile and swift like a jet fighter. This shift means that the platforming and jumping elements that were core gameplay features in DOOM Eternal will be significantly reduced in DOOM: The Dark Ages. Instead, the new DOOM game is focusing on revisiting the series’ roots by emphasizing strafing movements and close-quarters combat over high-flying acrobatics.
In addition to some minor adjustments to gameplay, id Software has announced that they’ll be incorporating larger, open-ended zones into DOOM: The Dark Ages. These areas aren’t a full-fledged open-world game, but rather extensive playgrounds where players can choose the sequence of tasks they wish to complete. Furthermore, these regions are expected to hide collectibles away from the main path, which when found, will enhance the power of the Doom Slayer.
To conclude, id Software unveiled a sneak peek of the Atlan – a towering 30-story mech for the Doom Slayer. This powerful machine will make its debut during certain sequences of “The Dark Ages” to engage in combat against giant demons. Originally seen in “DOOM Eternal“, the ability to pilot it is an exciting new addition exclusive to “The Dark Ages“.
In summary, “DOOM: The Dark Ages” seems incredible and is anticipated by longtime DOOM fans. As the game’s release in May approaches, we can expect to see more of it in action. Keep an eye on our coverage here at ComicBook for further insights into “DOOM: The Dark Ages”.
