Following the in-depth gameplay analysis at Xbox Developer_Direct, id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages has generated significant excitement as one of this year’s most anticipated games. The shift from the swift Doom Slayer to a more earthbound, massive character who brutally fights demons is enticing enough, but add to that the prospect of piloting an Atlan mech or having a dragon as a mount, and it becomes truly captivating.
As a fan, I’ve always wondered what drove id Software to create a more robust Slayer model. In an engaging Q&A session with True Achievements, creative director Hugo Martin revealed that the dark and gritty world portrayed in Frank Miller’s Batman comics significantly influenced their decision. Interestingly enough, the leaked title codename, DOOM Year Zero, was a tribute to the iconic graphic novel, Batman: Year One.
Martin shared his favorite comic of all time: Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight”. Surprisingly, many people seem to agree with him on this. In Martin’s words, the portrayal of Batman was massive and extraordinary. He was strong, powerful, and seemed invincible, almost like a tank. Every aspect of his weaponry was potent. The character just looked incredible, making Martin wish he could create a warrior as mighty as that, a more powerful Slayer.
Additionally, he expressed the opinion that id Software may have reached the boundary of mobility in DOOM Eternal. Essentially, there wasn’t any more room for speed or agility in DOOM Eternal. To clarify, we are extremely proud of DOOM Eternal and its DLCs, but it seemed like an extension of the Doom Slayer power fantasy that was intriguing to develop and would satisfy players. Both DOOM Eternal and its predecessor DOOM (2016) stand independently, but this felt like a unique spin on the Doom Slayer experience.
He’s not a lightweight; we’re always adjusting the sense of his weight. To put it simply, when he moves, it’s noticeable. Every action of his is grand and forceful, and it’s quite awe-inspiring.
On May 15th, DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a day one launch on Game Pass. There are whispers that it might also arrive for the Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-ordering the game gives you two days of early access, and those who go for the Premium Edition will receive the Divinity Skin Pack and additional campaign DLC.
