On Thursday, the 22nd of May, 2025, at 5:30 PM, another research company, Ampere, has shared their projected retail sales figures for the game DOOM: The Dark Ages.
According to The Game Business’ report, approximately 500,000 players are using the PS5, while over two million are on Xbox Series X|S. The rest of the roughly 500,000 players are distributed across Steam and other PC gaming platforms like the PC Game Pass.
The figure seems a bit more hopeful than the Alinea Analytics verdict suggests, but it still implies that the initial-price sales of the first-person shooter game might not be doing well. Instead, it’s possible that most Xbox gamers are experiencing this release through Xbox Game Pass.
In about a week since its release, DOOM: The Dark Ages has garnered the attention of three million gamers, as revealed by publisher Bethesda. However, it’s important to note that the number of players doesn’t always equate to the number of full-priced sales, particularly when the game is offered through a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass.
Currently, data company Aliena Analytics has disclosed their projections regarding the distribution of those 3 million players – and it paints a rather concerning picture.
Journalist Chris Dring reports that Ampere estimated approximately 2 million out of the total 3 million players were using Xbox consoles for this particular game. Although some of them will buy the game at full price, it’s expected that most players are testing the title via Xbox Game Pass.
According to Alien Analytics’ estimates, due to low simultaneous player numbers on Steam, the game might have been sold only about 400,000 times on Valve’s storefront, while only around 200,000 copies on PS5. However, they anticipate that approximately 2.2 million players have tried the game through Xbox Game Pass across both PC and console versions.
In simpler terms, it appears that total sales for the product in question are less than a million (when considering full-price transactions only). However, it’s important to note that we’re waiting for clarification on how Alinea Analytics calculates their results. For now, these figures seem consistent with the limited data points we have available.
As a gamer, I get it – Microsoft’s strategy is designed to encourage subscription to their service, and that’s exactly what they’re aiming for. Yet, there’s a lingering doubt in the back of my mind about how this model will hold up in the long run, particularly given that Microsoft is simultaneously promoting $80 games.
As a passionate gamer, I often wonder if an affordable subscription service could sustain Xbox’s massive first-party production, given that the same software isn’t selling in large numbers elsewhere. I can’t help but ponder what they truly think about this situation, as they tend to keep the real data hidden from us fans.
It appears that despite the appearance of 3 million players, DOOM: The Dark Ages isn’t thriving on PS5, as the cost for consumers is full-priced, which might not be appealing to many.
