Bethesda recently unveiled that DOOM: The Dark Ages will be available for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on May 15th, 2025. During a recent deep dive into the game’s creation at the concluded Xbox Developer_Direct, it was confirmed that this prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal is purely a single-player experience, with no multiplayer or cooperative play modes included. This decision by id Software enables them to construct their most extensive campaign yet.

View Urgent ForecastIn this game, although it maintains a general linear progression, the developers have emphasized that they’ve constructed the “broadest play area ever seen in a DOOM game.” This expansive setting often transforms the game into more of an open-ended exploration experience, allowing you to roam large, open areas at will. The team from id Software encourages players to seek out combat, hidden secrets, and upgrades, as the spirit of exploration is deeply embedded in the game itself.

In the game, powered by id Tech 8, their most potent engine yet, the combat dynamics have subtly evolved. Id Software has branded the DOOM Slayer in The Dark Ages as an “iron tank”, implying he stands firm and battles head-on, unlike the more agile approach seen in DOOM Eternal, which they compare to a fighter jet. In this game, you’re expected to engage directly with the medieval demons using weapons that are exceptionally powerful, such as the Shield Saw, rather than dodging them as you would in other versions.
In the latest version of DOOM: The Dark Ages, the team has significantly improved the game’s feel and responsiveness compared to previous editions. One notable enhancement is a revamp of the Glory Kill system. Unlike its predecessors where it was a pre-set animation that temporarily locked your control, Glory Kills in this game are seamlessly integrated into regular gameplay. They can be executed from various angles, making the combat experience more dynamic and fluid. This change allows players to perform a series of Glory Kills on multiple demons consecutively, as stated by the developers.
In the style of a medieval tune by Finishing Move (The Callisto Protocol, Borderlands 3, Halo 2 Anniversary), this tale serves as a prequel and is accessible for all, regardless of prior experience with earlier installments. The storyline unfolds like a grand “summer blockbuster” movie, with you stepping into the leading role. id Software has made an effort to incorporate more of the plot within the game’s cutscenes, reducing the need for codex entries.
