In contrast to its usual science fiction backdrop, the upcoming game titled “DOOM: The Dark Ages” will delve into a medieval fantasy setting. As disclosed by director Hugo Martin in an interview with Edge Magazine (through GamesRadar), id Software opted for this genre to make the player’s experience darker and more ominous in terms of gameplay.
Choosing to immerse oneself in medieval fantasy implies that DOOM: The Dark Ages will introduce distinct, innovative weapons reminiscent of ancient torture artifacts. Case in point, the Rail Spike, often likened to “a hammer and a massive spike,” and a tool primarily used for fracturing bones.
Martin mentioned that one factor in selecting the fantasy genre was the opportunity to delve deeper into themes of darkness and menace, as he put it, “expanding our creative arsenal.” When envisioning a medieval, dark fantasy setting, images such as torture devices, ropes, chains, and spikes may come to mind.
During the same interview, Martin elaborated on the expanse of the levels within “DOOM: The Dark Ages.” He characterized these areas where players battle waves of demons as the “most extensive” ones crafted by id Software up to that point.
Although these levels might seem extensive, Martin emphasized that players wouldn’t like spending excess time without engaging in battles with demons. He suggested that the ideal duration for players to explore an area would be approximately one hour. For those who are keen on completing every aspect, there’s plenty more to keep them busy if they so choose.
Martin mentioned, “I’m not sure if you’d enjoy playing just one Doom level for two hours.” He suggested that these levels should ideally be brief, enjoyable experiences lasting roughly an hour. However, if you aim for completeness, you might stretch that duration.
In the expansive scope of these vast regions, id Software had ample room to test out numerous strategies for utilizing the space. Consequently, gamers playing DOOM: The Dark Ages can anticipate a broader range of experiences throughout their gameplay.
Martin explained that initially, you may find yourself in a confined area, reminiscent of a dungeon. However, as you progress through the level, it will transition into a more expansive section, offering different experiences. Our aim is to ensure the player encounters a diverse range of environments.
The concept of DOOM: The Dark Ages aligns with a more ominous and menacing approach to weapon usage, as Martin recently disclosed that the Doom Slayer in this game was influenced by Frank Miller’s portrayal of Batman from his “The Dark Knight” graphic novel.
Martin shared that his most cherished comic, one that he believes many others also adore, is Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight”. He depicted Batman in such a way that was massive and awe-inspiring. He was strong and powerful, like a tank… Every aspect of his weaponry was powerful too. It was as if he said, ‘I wish I could create a warrior as formidable as that one,’ – a mighty, powerful warrior, much like a Slayer.
