DOOM: The Dark Ages Won’t Have Multiplayer

In contrast to their previous releases DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, which offered both single-player and multiplayer modes, the upcoming game in the series will solely concentrate on delivering an outstanding single-player experience, as announced by developer id Software.

In a recent chat with GamingBolt, executive producer Marty Stratton clarified that the upcoming game DOOM: The Dark Ages won’t feature multiplayer functionality.

Stratton explained that from the very beginning, we had already decided on our course. Our intention was to have more freedom in developing aspects such as the Atlan, the mech experience, and the dragon experience – these can be considered mini-games within the main game. While campaigns are a significant draw for modern DOOM games, we chose to concentrate all our efforts on them to produce the largest and most impressive DOOM game ever created.

During a separate discussion (through Eurogamer), director Hugo Martin shared similar sentiments as Stratton and clarified that by abandoning multiplayer and concentrating solely on the single-player storyline, id Software was able to incorporate the game’s highly anticipated Atlantis mech and dragon sequences.

He mentioned, “That’s the reason we incorporated the dragon and the Atlan [mech] into the game. You see, these elements have been our aspiration for several games, yet we couldn’t include them earlier due to the presence of a multiplayer component in our design. However, it was primarily intended to enhance the single-player campaign and elevate the gaming experience for players.

As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled about the news that DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to be id Software’s most expansive campaign yet, boasting a semi-open world and an increased emphasis on exploration. It’s clear that this game won’t fall short on content, even without multiplayer. To add to the excitement, it has been confirmed that the shooter will also receive additional campaign DLC post-launch.

On May 15, the game “DOOM: The Dark Ages” will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC platforms. You can find the PC system requirements by clicking this link.
