World Dominated by Doom” #5 presents a chaotic scenario, but it’s consistent with this series. At the end of “Blood Hunt”, Doctor Doom seized the title of Sorcerer Supreme, and this newfound power allowed him to pursue what he believes is his destiny – ruling the world. By compelling governments worldwide to prioritize their citizens’ welfare, Doom has garnered civilian support. Despite the heroes’ repeated attempts to overthrow him, Doom has successfully thwarted them all. However, in issue #4, Doom faced a formidable opponent when Dormammu invaded Earth.
In “World Dominated by Doom” #5, an unexpected alliance forms as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men join forces with Doom to combat Dormammu, the ruler of the Dark Dimension. This partnership pushes Doom to employ magical abilities that should be beyond his reach, creating a fascinating twist in the narrative.
In the confrontation with Dormammu, the heroes are kept busy, allowing Victor von Doom time to recuperate following his near-death encounter in issue #4. It was previously revealed that Doom allowed the barriers erected by Doctor Strange against Dormammu to fade, but he turns things around in issue #5. However, Scarlet Witch swiftly discerns the type of sorcery Doom employs and expresses doubts about its use. This triggers a classic Doom scenario as he unveils his plan for permanently banishing Dormammu.
Doom Uses Forever-Magic to Get Rid of Dormammu
In issue #4, Dormammu inflicted total devastation upon Doom by stripping him of the Eye of Agamotto’s power, rendering his best defense useless against Dormammu. Dormammu not only demolished Doom’s armor but also shattered almost every bone in his arms and legs. Before the battle commenced, Doom had already cast three spells – the most critical one summoning his Doombots to the Dark Dimension to liberate the imprisoned heroes. The heroes’ rescue allowed Doom time to recover and regain his strength. Utilizing the Sorcerer Supreme’s powers, Doom eventually managed to banish Dormammu. However, the heroes assumed that Doom had slain Dormammu, which was far from the truth. Instead, Doom conjured a spell that would imprison Dormammu in the Dark Dimension forever. Scarlet Witch, an adept magic user, expressed her astonishment as this spell is known as Forever-Magic, and she thought it impossible for Doom to cast such a powerful enchantment. In the end, Doom disclosed the underlying reasons behind his spell, shedding light on the entire situation.

The Scarlet Witch implies that immortal magic isn’t accessible for mortals because they aren’t eternal. However, Doom found a loophole as his spell’s effectiveness depends on him ruling Earth. In essence, Dormammu can’t leave the Dark Dimension as long as Doom is in control of Earth. There are certainly issues with this setup. For instance, Doom may not live forever, but I’m sure he has a contingency plan for that. The key point is that if Doom were to die or lose power, Dormammu could potentially attack.
In issue #3 of “One World Under Doom”, it becomes clear why Doom allowed Strange’s counter-Dormammu spells to expire. He wanted Dormammu to attack so he could showcase his plan to the heroes. By keeping them informed, Doom hoped to gain their trust and cooperation. He knew that Dormammu would eventually target Earth, and he had a strategy to counter such an attack. This intricate plot demonstrates that Doom’s scheme is far more complex than the heroes ever imagined.
The Heroes Have Played Right into Doom’s Hands
Ever since I came across issue #3 of “One World Under Doom“, where Doom disclosed that the spells confining him from Earth had weakened to nothing thanks to Doom himself, I sensed it was all part of Doom’s grand design. Given that Doom is a master strategist, he orchestrated this sequence of events for multiple purposes – firstly, to demonstrate his role as their protector, secondly, to manipulate the heroes into assisting him once more, thereby enhancing public trust in him, and lastly, to conjure a spell enabling him to present his Earth rule as beneficial. As long as Doom maintains control of the world, Dormammu will remain imprisoned within the Dark Dimension.
Doom is well aware that the heroes will never tolerate him ruling the world, so he’s taken extra precautions to secure his power. If the heroes decide to overthrow him, it won’t be a simple task – their actions could trigger global upheaval. Dormammu is poised to invade the world, and the heroes might find themselves blamed for this catastrophe. This move by Doom showcases his strategic depth, as he’s thinking on levels that the heroes can barely comprehend.
