Downton Abbey Star Reveals Emotional Farewell & Touching Tribute to Maggie Smith

The upcoming Downton Abbey movie is poised to be an emotionally stirring goodbye for fans, and Michelle Dockery has shared that not only does it serve as an appropriate tribute to the late Maggie Smith, but it also offers a heartwarming reunion of the cast.

The upcoming movie features the comeback of Paul Giamatti portraying Uncle Harold Levinson, Dockery’s on-screen relative on screen.

Reflecting on my delightful reunion with the talented Paul Giamatti, I must say it was a joy to collaborate with him once more. His infectious energy and camaraderie make every scene a pleasure to shoot.

Since he was already a family member, it’s delightful to have him return to the set. I’m genuinely looking forward to watching the completed movie.

As a devoted fan, I can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming film, which is being heralded as the final installment in the Downton Abbey series. This cinematic swan song will also serve as a heartfelt tribute to the extraordinary talent that was Dame Maggie Smith, who graced our screens as Robert Crawley’s (Hugh Bonneville’s) mother, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, throughout the beloved series and both films.

In the discussion about the third and concluding film, Dockery expressed, “This movie is a work of art. Reuniting for this project was like relishing a delightful treat. It truly honors Maggie Smith, the film.

89-year-old Smith tragically passed away last September, coinciding with the demise of her character, Violet, in the concluding moments of Downton Abbey: The New Era’s second movie.

Dockery’s remarks regarding Smith’s homage follow Gareth Neame’s announcement that the forthcoming movie will incorporate a tribute, honoring both the actress and her character.

Given that Dame Maggie has sadly passed away since our initial plans, it certainly adds an emotional depth to the tale we were already intending to tell,” Neame explained to TVLine.

Watching actors portray characters grieving for a family matriarch feels much more poignant now. This isn’t just an on-screen loss; it feels like we’re witnessing the mourning of the show’s own matriarch, making it seem more authentic and profound.

In much the same vein, Hugh Bonneville, known for portraying Robert Crawley, Smith’s on-screen son, had earlier expressed that the upcoming third installment would serve as an enduring homage to Smith.

As I chatted with Virgin Radio UK back in November, I shared my thoughts about this upcoming movie: “It’s primarily set within a house, and as we bid farewell to these cherished characters, it’s particularly poignant – both on-screen and now in reality. We sadly say goodbye to the legendary Dame Maggie, whose absence will be deeply felt. Yet, this final film will undoubtedly serve as an enduring tribute to her talent.

The upcoming Downton Abbey film is penned and orchestrated by Julian Fellowes and Simon Curtis, and several familiar faces from the series are set to reprise their roles in this third installment.

Besides Dockery, Giamatti, and Bonneville, we have familiar faces such as Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, and Dominic West rejoining the cast.
