Downton Abbey star to lead Channel 5 drama adaptation The Puzzle Lady

As a longtime fan of British television and a devotee of Phyllis Logan’s exceptional acting skills, I am utterly thrilled about The Puzzle Lady coming to Channel 5! Having followed her career since Downton Abbey days and being captivated by her recent BAFTA Scotland win for Guilt, I have no doubt that she will breathe life into the enigmatic Cora Felton with her signature charm and wit.

Today it’s been announced that Phyllis Logan will take on a lead role in Channel 5’s upcoming “cozy mystery” series, entitled “The Puzzle Lady.

I’m often recognized for my memorable performances as Mrs. Hughes in Downton Abbey and Maggie Lynch in the BBC’s gripping, darkly comedic series Guilt. Just last year, I was honored with a BAFTA Scotland award for my work on that show.

From now on, Logan is set to direct the ensemble for a new take on the mystery series “The Puzzle Lady Mysteries” by the late writer Parnell Hall. This series, consisting of 20 installments published between 1999 and 2019, forms the basis for this adaptation.

The synopsis for the first season has been released, confirming that the story will begin with “a strange murder” that shakes the “sleepy market town of Bakerbury”.

It continues: “The local police are baffled by a crossword puzzle left on the body. With their case going nowhere, they turn reluctantly to Cora Felton [Logan], a recent arrival in Bakerbury.”

Felton is recognized by some as the “Puzzle Lady,” a title lending optimism to the investigators that her unique abilities could potentially solve the first-ever murder in their tranquil town.

“The outline hints: ‘However, the peculiar Cora isn’t entirely truthful about her identity. As she gets deeply involved in a perplexing murder case that leaves the townspeople puzzled, she manages to win both allies and adversaries.’

Paul Testar, the drama commissioning editor for Channel 5 and Paramount Plus, expressed his satisfaction about adding “The Puzzle Lady” to Channel 5’s lineup. This intriguing, cozy crime drama is sure to keep audiences on their toes, guessing whodunit while also providing plenty of entertainment.

“Phyllis Logan will be excellent as Cora Felton, our Puzzle Lady.”

Emily Dalton, the managing director at production company Factual Fiction, commented: “Dominique Moloney’s screenplay brings Cora Felton to life in a way that jumps out from the page. We are thrilled that the talented Phyllis Logan will breathe life into The Puzzle Lady on screen.

At the moment, “The Puzzle Lady” is shooting scenes up in Northern Ireland. You can expect her debut on Channel 5 sometime next year. Stay tuned for further news!
