The Veilguard, developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts (EA), attracted approximately 1.5 million players. However, this figure was nearly half of EA’s initial expectations for the game’s performance in its third fiscal quarter, as revealed in a preliminary earnings report issued by the company.
We haven’t yet received Electronic Arts’ complete financial report for the quarter, which is due on February 4, 2025. The company anticipates a minor decrease, around ten percent, and besides Dragon Age, they attribute the underachievement to EA Sports FC 25 as well.
In Q3, we kept on providing top-notch games and experiences throughout our collection, but Dragon Age and EA SPORTS FC 25 didn’t meet our anticipated net bookings. However, this month, our teams introduced a major gameplay overhaul along with the annual Team of the Year update in FC 25; initial player reactions and early results are promising. We remain optimistic about our future plans and anticipate growth in FY26 as we move forward with our development schedule.
Set for release in October 2024, Dragon Age: The Veilguard marks the long-anticipated fourth installment in the Dragon Age series, arriving ten years after Dragon Age: Inquisition from 2014. Since Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t part of any game subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass, it is likely that the game has already sold approximately 1.5 million copies.
Single-player games face an uphill battle
This news is undeniably disheartening for fans of Dragon Age, given that the anticipation for The Veilguard has been substantial due to the extended wait. Over the years, the fourth installment in this fantasy series underwent numerous resets, with various directors entering and exiting the project at BioWare. At one juncture, the game was even designed as a live service game before being revamped into a single-player experience once more.
With an increasing number of players devoting their time to just a few live-service games, it becomes increasingly challenging for new games to emerge as major hits. In the year 2023, Starfield was the sole single-player game to make it into the top ten most popular games. In my previous articles about gaming trends for 2024, I discussed the issue of “black hole” titles, a problem that doesn’t yield an immediate solution.
Recently, I went through each Dragon Age game again as I was preparing a summary of the story thus far, and finding these comparisons intriguing as I approached The Veilguard. In my critique of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, I noted that “The battle system is distinctly altered and the atmosphere shifts, yet the characters here maintain the crucial, impactful heart that BioWare is renowned for. Despite being significantly different in many aspects from the fantasy series I cherished growing up, Dragon Age: The Veilguard holds its ground alongside earlier adventures in Thedas with honor.
In the future, BioWare is currently developing the fifth installment of Mass Effect, utilizing Unreal Engine 5 for its creation. This project is still in its initial stages and isn’t projected to hit the shelves within the upcoming years. Meanwhile, various EA studios are simultaneously working on the upcoming Battlefield game.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5.
