According to interviews and promotional disclosures from Dragon Ball producer Akio Iyoku, the connection to Dragon Ball GT was deliberate. The team aimed to create a series that older fans could enjoy with their children. This meant blending the familiar with something new, which is why it wasn’t entirely unexpected to see a revamped Super Saiyan 4 Goku. However, an interesting twist was the inclusion of a magical clothing change during the transformation, similar to the non-canonical version from earlier.
Super Saiyan 4 Still Gives Goku New Clothes
Episode 18 of Dragon Ball Daima introduced a fresh twist on Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 form, diverging somewhat from its appearance in Dragon Ball GT. This new version, supervised by the late franchise creator Akira Toriyama, is integrated into the official canon and triggers differently. Instead of being activated by Bulma’s invention firing a special energy beam at Goku, it’s Neva who employs his enigmatic Namekian magic to ignite this transformation from within Goku, making their transformations fundamentally distinct.
In the latest and officially recognized version of Super Saiyan 4, Goku maintains his youthful appearance instead of transforming into an adult form as in Dragon Ball GT. This transformation also includes a magical adjustment to his attire, ensuring that his clothing adapts to fit his new form. Unlike before, he now sports different pants and shoes. The magic used for this change is attributed to Neva, who appears to have the power to provide clothes for others, much like Piccolo. It’s plausible to think of Neva as someone who can create clothing on the spot to accommodate Goku during this unique transformation process.
What Else Is New About Super Saiyan 4?
In contrast to how Super Saiyan 4 first appeared in Dragon Ball GT, this fresh interpretation introduces several distinct differences beyond just visual aspects. Most notably, the red hair, which can be found both on his body as fur and atop his head, resembles the shade Goku possesses when utilizing Super Saiyan God. This new form also exhibits a hint of their fiery aura during transformation, suggesting there are additional alterations to examine between the two versions.
Due to Neva’s magic playing a crucial role in activating this transformation, Super Saiyan 4 occupies a special position within the Dragon Ball chronology. It was not employed before Dragon Ball Super, and it’s probable that it won’t be used again outside of the Demon Realm unless Neva directly assists in its manifestation. Now, fans can only speculate on how Super Saiyan 4 might evolve in the anime as time goes by.
