Dragon Ball Daima: The Anime Needs a New Fusion (And We Know Just The One)

As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan who’s grown up with Goku and his friends, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of a new fusion in the series. The introduction of the Join Bugs in Daima has certainly stirred up anticipation among fans, especially since it seems Akira Toriyama himself is hinting towards something special for Piccolo.

In the world of Dragon Ball, a significant aspect has been the creation of powerful new beings through character fusion. The Buu Saga introduced two methods of fusion: the Fusion Dance and the Potara Earrings. However, fusion in Dragon Ball wasn’t exclusive to these methods; it was present much earlier. For instance, Piccolo had fused with Nail and Kami before the Saiyans even dabbled in fusion. With Dragon Ball Daima introducing a new fusion method, it’s high time for this shonen series to explore unconventional ways of fusion.

If you haven’t come across the novel fusion method presented in “Dragon Ball Daima”, it was first showcased in the fourth episode of the continuation series, Dragon Ball Z. During their journey through the Demon Realm alongside Glorio and Kaioshin, Goku stumbles upon a demon-owned store in search of a replacement for their damaged spaceship. In this store, he encounters an assortment of items called “Medi-Bugs”. Some of these bugs share similarities with Senzu Beans, healing injuries for those who consume them. However, the Join Bugs are unique in that they cause characters to merge temporarily. We can expect to see more of these fusion-inducing bugs in “Daima” as the series progresses.

The Fusion Daima Needs

Upon the arrival of the Join Bugs, anime enthusiasts speculated that a new blend of Goku and Vegeta was imminent. While it’s possible they could fuse again, we’re eager for something fresh. For quite some time now, these two Saiyan warriors have been the go-to choices for Dragon Ball’s fusion events, but surprisingly, another Z-Fighter has tagged along on this journey to the Demon Realm.

In part, the creation of “Dragon Ball Daima” was influenced by concepts from the late “Dragon Ball” creator Akira Toriyama. Notably, Toriyama has expressed in the past that his preferred character among the ever-growing Z-Fighter crew was Piccolo. Considering this, it could be thrilling to envision a scenario where a Namekian fuses with either Goku or Vegeta, offering an exciting addition to the shonen series. To date, a fusion between a Namekian and a Saiyan has never taken place in “Dragon Ball”, making such a fusion a potential jaw-dropping event.

A New Namekian Fusion

There’s still much we don’t know about the Join Bugs, and fans have come up with various speculations regarding whether more than two characters could merge using them. Perhaps in the future, we might witness a fusion between Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo, thanks to these novel edibles. This would potentially give them an advantage against Tamagami, Makaioshin, and Gomah. Apart from introducing a thrilling new character, much of the excitement would stem from imagining what this fused entity would appear like and the name they would choose for it.

In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Toriyama introduced a fresh transformation for Piccolo, dubbed Orange Piccolo, demonstrating once again his creator’s affection for the Namekian character. Given Toriyama’s significant role in shaping this prequel to the original series, the concept of Piccolo merging with the Join Bugs carries more significance. Here’s hoping we witness a unique fusion unlike any fusion we’ve seen before!

But We Want a Piccolo Fusion Now

In the animated series offshoot called Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Piccolo never combined with any of the other Z-Warriors. However, we did see some extraordinary pairings in this spin-off. For instance, there was a fusion between Vegeta and Trunks called Vegeks, while another fusion involved Trunks and Gohan called Gohanks. Despite this, a specific video game allowed players to experiment with fusing various Z-Warriors.

In 2016, the game titled “Dragon Ball Fusions” came out for Nintendo 3DS. This game lets players combine a multitude of characters, both heroes and villains, to create unique new ones, although it’s not part of the main storyline. If you can find a copy and are curious about what fusion-created Z-Fighters might look like, this game is worth checking out. As for the arcade version, the “Heroes” game may have finished its run, but the zany spirit of this spin-off lives on. Now, “Super Dragon Ball Divers” is set to replace the long-running arcade game and will likely continue in a similar vein.
