The series titled “Dragon Ball Daima” provided numerous thrilling scenes for fans, such as officially incorporating well-loved character transformations and offering a fresh background for the universe. Despite initially appearing as a humorous throwback to traditional Dragon Ball, Daima unveiled intricate lore about Demons, the Kais, and Namekians. Throughout the series, Goku participated in numerous exciting battles, while Vegeta attained a legendary Super Saiyan form that was never shown before in the original canon. Piccolo, on the other hand, didn’t have significant achievements but mainly fought minor villains and joined major skirmishes. His main role in Daima was to offer information about Namekians.
In the show “Daima,” the history of the Namekian species was expanded upon significantly, delving into their origins. It was revealed that Namekians hail from the same realm as the Kais, who were officially named the Glind. This revised backstory for Namekians brings them closer to how King Piccolo and Kami were initially portrayed by Akira Toriyama. However, despite all these enlightening details about Piccolo’s species and their background, the character himself didn’t contribute anything particularly remarkable in “Dragon Ball Daima.” Although it’s always enjoyable to spend more time with the beloved green warrior, “Dragon Ball Daima” failed to make good use of Piccolo.
What Was Piccolo’s Role in Dragon Ball Daima?
In the story of Daima, Piccolo joined Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma on their mission to save Dende and gather the Dragon Balls from the Demon Realm. His job was to help explain the latest information about the Namekian species, providing a clearer understanding for viewers about this race. At times, he acted as a balanced counterpart to Goku’s impulsiveness and Vegeta’s aggression. Among the main characters in Daima, Piccolo stood out as the most level-headed and composed. However, it is often his contributions that are eclipsed by those of the rest of the team.
In the “Dragon Ball” series, Goku takes on the majority of the key battles, even displaying remarkable transformations in Episodes 18 and 19 that leave a lasting impression. Vegeta too gets some impressive moments in the storyline named “Daima“. Shin, the Supreme Kai of Universe 7, plays a more significant role in “Daima” compared to Piccolo, as he receives substantial character development and background details throughout the series. This development has made Shin’s character more complex than it was in previous “Dragon Ball” shows. The introduction of new characters with larger-than-life personalities tends to overshadow Piccolo in “Daima“.
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but feel that Piccolo, with his stoic and unwavering demeanor, is truly captivating. Yet, amidst the vibrant personalities of other characters in the series, Piccolo sometimes fades into the background. This is surprising, given that he’s one of Akira Toriyama’s beloved creations.
In theory, Piccolo should be a crucial part of the main team, contributing to the lore of the Namekians and adding a unique dynamic to our group. However, I can’t help but feel that he’s more of a shadow in this series rather than a distinct character, especially since he lacks significant action scenes.
Even with only one episode left from the anticipated 20, Piccolo hasn’t had a moment as memorable as Goku or his other allies. It’s a shame, because I was hoping for more from him in this series.
Piccolo’s Role in Daima is Emblematic of the Entire Franchise
Although it might seem that Piccolo’s role in “Dragon Ball Daima” appears less significant compared to others, he still fares better than most characters due to a pattern in newer “Dragon Ball” media, which tends to concentrate largely on a select few characters, primarily Goku and Vegeta. These two Saiyans receive more screentime and fight scenes compared to any other character within the franchise. Despite not making significant contributions to “Daima”, Piccolo was among the group that ventured into the Demon Realm. In contrast, every other main cast member chose to remain behind, even beloved characters like Krillin and Gohan.
In the series, Goku and Vegeta often receive the limelight, leaving less focus on other beloved characters. Although it’s understandable that the franchise highlights its most recognized figures, this preference has meant fewer opportunities for the rest of the characters to shine. Fans yearn to see more of these lesser-featured characters, especially in the latest movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which was a smart move by focusing on Piccolo and Gohan instead of Goku and Vegeta. The Dragon Ball universe is brimming with untold stories, and it’s high time for the series to delve deeper. After his stellar performance in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Piccolo deserves another moment in the spotlight if Toei Animation could make that happen. Additionally, let’s give Tien some meaningful storyline as well.
